For the first time, more than half of people in the UK do not identify as religious, a survey suggests.

Another step towards civilization. The God myth is so absurd, I'm more amazed at how many do still believe.
It's a little bit odd that ain't it?
My mother was quite upset when I told her I was a non-believer, and in the end I had to tell a white lie when she asked me if I believe we will "all be together when we die".
Which, in my opinion, points to why religion exists. A lot of people struggle to come to terms with their own mortality, that it doesn't last for ever. I struggled with it for a long time as I tried to shake off the chains of indoctrination.
My mother was also fearful that, as a non believer, I would somehow lose any moral compass I had. I merely pointed her to the stories of catholic priests who abused young children and she said "yes, but they are the priests that don't believe in God!".
I didn't come from a particularly religious background, but I remember being petrified that I was going to burn in hell for the multitude of sins that I had unwittingly committed as a teenage boy. It's in such an environment that these "men of God" are able to commit such heinous crimes.
It was Escort, only the nudies would do it for me.
Of course there is a difference. I respect all religions to a point, providing those religions don't impact on my quality of life. I'll donate to church funds, because it's a community thing despite the fact that I see it as nothing more than a myth.
The thing is, nearly all religions instill fear in their followers, and they also promise an ever lasting life. Very powerful tools to get people to do all sorts of things - not all of them wholesome.
My parents used to send me and my brothers to Sunday school when we were little. I always wondered why we had to go and they didnt - especially as they weren't religious at all and never taught us about Jesus and stuff.
Looking back now it's obvious that they just packed us off so they could indulge in some afternoon delight.
If Jesus had been born and died in modern times, religious types would have to wear miniature electric chairs or guillotines around their necks instead of gold crucifixes, and people who experience stigmata would not bleed from their hands and feet, they would violently shake with their hair standing on end and smoking, or their heads would fall off.
Religion is a man-made method of control favoured by the rulers for thousands of years. The winding down of religion began in the 60's with the introduction of the contraceptive pill, drugs, the "devils" music, free love, etc. Was it a coincidence it happened this way, or was it planned? Who knows, but the people today have been conditioned to reject religion, the same as people up to the 50's were conditioned to accept religion. There may be some overlap, as things of this magnitude take many generations to complete.
I suspect that a number of stories have altered over the years too.
A friend of mine once told me a story (I can't verify the truthfulness of the story, but knowing the story teller I think it's highly likely to be true) of an American and his wife (both white) who went to Japan to work. Both were devoutly religious.
Anyway, after a few months, the wife became pregnant and, lo and behold, when she gave birth she gave birth to a mixed-race child.
The husband insisted to my friend that he was the father, and he gave a story about some bloke in the Bible who worked on a farm and fell in love with the owner's daughter.
The owner disapproved of the relationship, and would only allow the farm hand to marry his daughter if he worked on the farm without any pay. The farm hand did that, and so the father allowed him to marry one of his daughters, but not the one he wanted.
He protested, and the owner again set him some challenge and again the farm hand completed the challenge and so the father allowed him to marry the daughter that the farm hand had fallen for.
The father forced the boy to continue working on the farm, but promised him that any speckled sheep he reared would be his. All the sheep were white. So, the farmhand spent his time forcing the sheep to look at speckled objects (I think it was trees) and, boom, one day a sheep gave birth to a speckled sheep and another and another. And, fairly soon, the farm hand had a whole flock of speckled sheep.
So, the American reasoned that his wife had spent the past year looking at nothing other than the Japanese locals and that explained why "his" son was of mixed race.

something of interest brother
Interesting point. Tbh there are religious people who follow religion like a drug and this gives them tunnel vision and also those who use it to big up their egos by thinking they are a better person coz they don't "sin". Personally I follow religion coz Pascal's Wager but I ain't really devout as I realise that religion has been used to divide and rule and much of modern 'religion' has been distorted from it's original form
Sun, drugs and sex. The worship of any or all of which are the true source of every religion and indeed evolution of mankind. Appeal to authority fallacy presented by witch doctors, shaman and priests have been usurped by scientists to explain the mysteries of the universe.
Humans are still animals driven by base instincts to survive and form relationships, community for mutual protection. Those who have the most power have the most fear and exert the most control over free will. As a method to control free thought, religion was and still is that yoke.
A god or not, one day soon we'll all be extinct and the planet will be better for it in the long term.
Reminds me of the story of a white missionary who went to an isolated tribe in Africa.
Nearly a year fter he arrived, a young black female gave birth to a "pale" baby.
Outraged, the chief called the missionary for an explanation.
Thinking quickly, the missionary pointed to the sheep the tribe kept.
" you see that most sheep are white, but occasionally, one is born with a black face"
"ok", said the chief "I not tell if you not tell"
