Booked to go next May - is there any recommendations? where to stay?
There's 6 of us so was considering an airbnb but I can't get some of the others around to the idea of it yet.

It depends what you want. Many (mostly younger) people prefer Brooklyn to Manhattan these days. If you're coming mainly to see the sights you're probably better off in Manhattan. If you prefer walking, you might want to consider staying below 59th Street, if you don't mind taking the subway you could stay pretty much anywhere you want within reason. There's probably not much that would interest you in the Bronx, unless you want to go to a Yankees game. Queens could be a good, cheap option if you find somewhere close to a subway stop.

We didnt do really that much when we went. Katz deli was good. Pastrami on rye, everything else was average. But that was great.
Id avoid going up the statue of liberty and just get the boat to under it. It is a full on mission to the top and not worth it. The photo oppportunity at the bottom is the best.
http://www.unclejacks.com/ is immense. But take your credit card!!!!!!
I'm going hopefully November.
Is it more expensive then London and do you literally have to tip everyone ???
Stayed in Mid Manhattan. Would recommend you book ferry to statue of liberty and Ellis Island on line ,and pick up at ferry port. Get one of those bus tickets that take you around Manhattan hop on /hop off. Pretty easy to find your way around thanks to their numbered streets /avenues

I wouldn't worry about crime in Manhattan below Central Park (which is that thin grey rectangle in the middle). Nor would I worry about the 90th and 94th Precincts in Brooklyn. The other darker shaded areas in Brooklyn, Queens, the Upper East Side and Bronx should be avoided.
When I went about 16 months ago or so, I bumped into Lawnmower at Ellis island!!!, stayed around mid manhattan and walked just about everywhere!!
I'm in Manhattan at the moment. Rockerfeller centre worthwhile,911 memorial poignant, most things expensive so bring a lot of wonga. Times square rammed. Bring comfy shoes and walk everywhere.
Loads of information here https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowFo..._New_York.html
Check out the FAQ as well, really useful.
My top tip, if you want to see the Statue of Liberty, catch the Staten Island ferry, it's free and goes right past the island where the statue is.
I've stayed at the New Yorker a couple of times oposite Madison Square garden, also the Waldorf and my favourite, the Marriott Marquess on Times Square.
went in Feb. Loved the place. Safe as you like, Brooklyn is a must visit, never felt threatened at all. We stayed lower east side Manhattan, it seems to be the happening area. We were just off Essex on Orchard St.
Statten Island Ferry for free, Rockafella tower for views, central park, brooklyn bridge, the high line, and so much more
I could suggest all the usual places and they are worth doing but some of my favourite spots were the less touristy spots. Strolling around the West Village and Chelsea. Also, Brooklyn is also very interesting, if a bit hipster now!
Above all though, the best thing to do is get one of the bus tour packages. Use it as a hop on/off way of getting around town while at the same time seeing a few of the sights. Will save you a load of walking time and taxi costs. You also get to see some of the more fascinating places you wouldn't otherwise, the tours around Brooklyn, Harlem and the Bronx were one of my favourite parts. We had one which came with fast pass tickets for any 3 of the big sight seeing spots. Saved a lot of money on the tickets and skipped huge lines to go up the Empire State/One World Trade etc.
Also, the best view in NYC is from the Rockerfeller Building. If you only want to do one of the big sky scrapers I'd reccomend that one.
Make sure you have a kwarfee and a baygul.
Does anyone know when the sports seasons start and finish? I'm trying to find tickets to American football or basketball but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information for next May!
Baseball season starts in April. Basketball and hockey regular seasons will be over, but the playoffs will still be on. The Rangers should make the NHL playoffs. I very much doubt if either of the basketball teams will still be playing.
