I always thought it was the game against your nearest rivals.but Barca/Real Madrid keeps getting referred to as a Derby game, when there’s almost 400 miles between them.
any game played over 2km.
What constitutes a Derby game?
When a nearby team plays one another
When we used to play Wrexham, that was always referred to as a derby.
I think that was called a welsh derby as Bristol shity would be our main darby to me Jacks is a darby but did not turn out in numbers like Bristol shity did my opinion
O and they was all ways running up the hill
Yeah, I never got that. Especially considering Swansea and Newport were around in those days too.
For me, each club has one derby game - that game coming against their nearest rivals. I doubt if Palace fans think of a game against Arsenal as a derby.
What is getting me, these days, is where games are labelled "The M62 derby", or the "A11 derby". Derbies don't need names.
Is it the Basques v Spanish thing.
Sevenside Derby.
South Wales Derby.
Welsh Derby.
bang on fella

I always hear Barcelona vs Real Madrid referred to as the Classico
Atleti v Real is the derby
Barca v Real is the Clasico.
I have a housemate who's bemused by the thought that Brighton v Crystal Palace is a derby.
Oxford English Dictionary definition is: A sports match between two rival teams from the same area.
I quite like the idea of giving names to Derby games. The Old Farm Derby always make me smile (Norwich v Ipswich) and I have heard Exeter v Plymouth referred to as the Donkey Derby. My favourite though is Cwmbran Celtic v Croesyceliog......El CrossyCo 😎
Whatever Sky/BT decide is probably the modern method of defining a derby game.
I suppose we're a bit of an anomaly as most of the time we play teams from a different country which adds an extra dimension to most games regardless of proximity, ie there seems to be more ill feeling when Cardiff come to town as opposed to Fulham for example
This was a good Derby game
