As a City Bristol has so much to offer
Sorry mate but as an urban geography graduate I have to put you right ....in England most cities are based on the metropolitan population of a city .....thus Wakefield , Stockport , Wigan etc , all cities far far smaller than Cardiff have towns sometimes ten miles from them included in their population , as they are under the administration of the larger town .......if this was done in the case of Cardiff , Barry , penarth and caerphilly would push Cardiff to a population of over half a million
This is correct most English northern towns populations appear far bigger than they actually are due to being under control of , in this case Wakefield ......take away Castleford , Pontefract etc and the urban population of Wakefield drops to a small city
Bridgend county borough has a population of 130000 , Bridgend has a population of about 40000! .....but throw in porthcawl , maesteg and the Bridgend valleys and hey ho you have this skewed population data
They are indeed , Leeds is again a metropolitan city which basically envelopes lots of smaller towns and merges with Bradford .......which again itself often is given as a city including bingley , which would be like adding penarth and Barry to the population of cardiff
Leeds is a big city , bigger than Cardiff but nowhere near the size of Glasgow
I think around 500000 is nearer the mark
Leeds population includes towns like otley .......miles away from the city of Leeds
It's like Newcastle , population wise it is given as smaller than Cardiff but go there and it is part of a huge urban sprawl that merges into one ......Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside etc
It's all very confusing but go to Manchester city centre and compare the size of the buildings and amenities to Leeds and the difference is enormous ......Manchester city centre is huge and serves as an urban core for the city of Manchester , whose population is given as smaller than Leeds ......and Stockport , Wigan , Oldham , Rochdale , Bury etc
Oldham ......population about 100k
Oldham metropolitan borough population .....230 k !!!!
Has anyone considered including Penarth, Barry, or even Caerphilly, when calculating Cardiff's population?
Yes - the Office for Nstional Statistics. Penarth, Dinas Powis, Caerphilly and Pontypridd are all part of Cardiff Urban Area as they are contiguous with Cardiff. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiff_Urban_Area
Barry is not included as there are gaos between Sully and Dinas Powis and Penarth.
“Urban Area” is a sensible metric for calculating the size of a city. “Conurbation” is a related term which means roughly the same. “Metro Area” refers to the wider hinterland; Cardiff’s Metro Area includes Barry, all of the central valleys and towns like Merthyr and Aberdare, and in some people’s view, Newport and the eastern valleys.
Can we all just agree that ukcities.co.uk is the worst link ever posted on ccmb?
If we're talking cities with more than one Football League club, then the article has to be right surely, it comes down to a choice between Bristol and Stoke, with the former getting my vote because of the amount of time Stoke City have spent in the old First Division and the Premier League.
When I was a kid, I'm sure the answer would have been Bradford because they had two sides who always seemed to be in Division Four - for now though, it's Bristol as far as I'm concerned.

"If Ben were only happy when his favourite team did well, he would not be happy very often.
Instead Ben is happy whenever a team he hates does badly.
There are lots and lots of them."
Unfortunately our Capital of Wales Club has underperformed for many years considering it’s potential and fan base of 1.5 million. Very comparable with Manchester and Liverpool who have TWO top Premiership clubs each?
May aswell include penarth really, there isn’t even a gap and it’s only 3 miles from the city centre whereas some suburbs are double that. Cardiff’s population will be pushing 400k soon I hear from a mate in the council. So many houses being built around the city or in pipeline.
