I won't miss him.
Dreadful commentator.
Oh come on! He's a legend. Bit dated now but there are many worse..
Jon champion? Michael Owen?
Can’t stand Motson.
Love the interview with Clough ripping him a new one.
In his day, the best commentstor around. Spoke to him once. The day Alston almost scored from kick off. Name the opposition
Motson has always been like an overgrown schoolboy.
a bit harsh regarding motto
an institution to the older MOTD viewers
thought he was ok nothing more
Really? He gets players names wrong, he doesn't describe the game, he tries to be funny "Breakfast with Beckham". His commentary of the game is barely technical, "ohhh, did you see that?" He is shit, and only a public broadcaster like the BBC would have kept him on all that time. Am I showing a lack of respect? Of course I am, since when should I be respectful to an overpaid bloke who is crap at his job? The guy has achieved a lot, and most of that is down to the incompetent recruitment of the BBC.
Best commentator, and crazily left in Motson's shadow for a long time, Barry Davies.
Also, Hugh Johns was good - but he was beaten by that Wolstenholme line. Unfortunately, a lot of commentators try to recreate the "There's people on the pitch", and you can hear them desperately trying to scrape out a line that will live on in people's memories. Motson is just one such commentator.
Good riddance. Dreadful and mind numbingly dull commentator. Barry Davies was so much better.
I went to the funeral of Hugh Johns in Radyr some years ago ( I was in school with his son and knew the family well). The great and the good of football commentating and journalism were there. Motson cropped up in their conversation quite quickly and none of them had a good word to say about him either personally or professionally. I was quite surprised at the depth of animosity but quite happy as my low opinion of him appeared to be borne out.
Also he’s one of those “he had every right to go down there” type of commentators, clueless.
I have fond memories of Motson's commentary, but it's probably a nostalgia thing.
Whether he had some kind of personality disorder or not, along with Barry Davies he was synonymous with football on the BBC.
He had a unique style of commentary and doubtless he will have had some influence on others in his field, even if it is how not to do it.
Personally I liked David Coleman's commentary to both Motson and Davies but he also presented his own show "Sportsnight" midweek, which was a higher position again.
I can’t stand Lawro or Andy Townsend.... absolute garbage
