Dare I mention it again, but earlier in the season, Ian Wright on MOTD2 pointed out that we were looking to find players in the box with crosses rather than putting the balls into dangerous areas and relying on our forward players to make clever runs to get on the end of them. Looking back against Burnley, we did put some dangerous balls into the box but our forward players were so static, just waiting for the ball to get to them, that it's easy at this level to defend against.
Arguably the best player we have at timing his runs in the box unnoticed and getting on the end of things is someone who was signed as a right back. Zohore has undoubted ability and his pace and strength are his biggest assets, but he's not particularly a forward who gets on the end of crosses. This season is undoubtedly passing him by as well, sadly. Ward is probably better inside the box but maybe lacks a bit of height. Reid could play up front but needs someone up there to act as a battering ram.
Last season Hoilett and Mendez-Laing scored quite a few coming in from wide areas, but Hoilett has been disappointing so far.
It's a conundrum with no great options. I also think that we sometimes try a bit too hard to get the first win that it causes mistakes.
