Thread: What next for Patterson?

    What next for Patterson?

Where will he fit in ?

If we want to go with the front 4 that beat United then he’s out of the picture there.

    Central midfield- unlikely

Right Back- Warnock doesn’t like him there

Can’t see us going 3-5-2, so wing back which may suit him better is out

So he could end up back as ‘cover for everyone ‘ and super sub

What do you all reckon ?

Unless we sign a striker who is really good in the air then Warnock will fit him in. It will be a combination of no. 10 striker and right midfield.

We don't have a dependable striker, so I think Warnock needs to get a new striker in. That will probably result in Paterson being used as cover I think.

Provided he stays fit, I think Paterson will be in the starting line more than out of it in the coming season. While the front four which started at Old Trafford were portrayed as a dream combination by some, I reckon Neil Warnock will want to have Paterson's aerial ability in the team somewhere if Kenneth Zohore is starting regularly - our manager has always had trouble finding a "natural" number ten for his 4-2-3-1 system and so I wonder if Decordova-Reid might be the one to miss out again?.

Even if we sign a striker who is really good in the air or Gary Madine suddenly starts to look like a £10 million player, I still think we could well see Paterson pushed out on to the right instead of one of the specialist wingers.

Based on what he gives us, especially in the championship, I cannot see him out of the team too often but perhaps starting position will depend on the opposition and where Warnock thinks he can be most effective.

Though he's not the type of player I pay to watch player football, I've got nothing but admiration for Patterson. He maximizes his skills set and has balls of steel.

I'd like to see him play a bit more at full back. He has bags of energy and can get up and down and I have seen him deliver some wicked crosses since he's been here.

Playing him in midfield or number 10 makes me want to cry though, even though at times it can be effective.

    Totally agree. Warnock loves Patterson.

To be fair at Championship level hes a player you want on your side and the opposition will hate him. We have far more talented players in all his best positions. But hes really consistent wins his battles and gets goals. He wont have a regular position but he will be a regular starter.

Spot on , and he know that , he's ideal for us never let us down , brings great character to the team ( and lets not underestimate that in any squad )

Id settle for 3 or 4 Patterson's against 3 or 4 overpaid prima donnas, who are better skilled , overpaid , just creating envy in the squad and on the filed , it wont get you up, or winning trophies ask Manure fans .

When I played football it was about a smattering of skill , strong tough characters , team spirit .

Paul when Patterson has played on the right he has had very good games!

I hate generalisations like this. Man City and Liverpool had more 'character' than anyone this season, but they also had far more skill. Just because a player has ability he doesn't have to be a prima donna!

I think he came on on the right against Huddersfield away when NML got injured early, and was absolutely pony. I do like him though

    Re: What next for Patterson?

play NML upfont instead of Zohore and play Patterson on the right wing.

    NML upfront. No.

    Paterson on the wing. No.

I said this last season. I made a post questioning whether or not he was good enough - but he proved himself to be one of the most reliable players we had. His versatility is incredible, and his height is so great.

He will find a way into the side.
Even if he isn’t good enough to get into the first team, we will get an injury here or there and we will see him strut his stuff and make that position his own.

It would be criminal if Reid isn’t a regular next season after the way he finished last season

Totally agree. If in midfield or up front he gives his all but is not natural.
He came to us as the Scottish full back so develop him there.

I tend to agree - although, I see Paterson as a typical Warnock type player, but not a typical Warnock type full back.

Slap on the wrist for me

Paterson will be one of the first names on the team sheet.

    Re: What next for Patterson?

In fairness to Paterson, he did more for us up front in the Premier League than any of our other strikers. If Zohore took his place after the season he had, it would be a kick in the nuts for Paterson. I'd have Paterson and Reid as our front two.

    Re: What next for Patterson?

Every Championship side needs a Paterson in it.

May not be the most talented player but he is a nuisance who can force errors with his workrate.
