Always wondered why
Interesting story of it on wikipedia. apparently planned as "The Wembley of the north"
They were a third division side when it was built, originally with a capacity of 40,000. Their average attendances were around 12k at the time. It appears the club had ideas of grandeur and wanted to build the "Wembley of the North". They didn't manage to raise enough money and so only two stands were built. Originally the plans were for a stadium of around 80,000 capacity.
https://www.onevalefan.co.uk/2014/09...ongsheet-1950/ Here's a copy of the songsheets used for the first game to be played there (against Newport oddly enough). Over 30,000 there that day. Their average attendance that season was around 11,000.
Uniquely it was the only football league club not named after a geographical area , its actually in Burslem , in the uk the heart of the Potteries, think the mighty Rhys Weston played for them.
Followed by a small band of snide tw@ts
Ive always hated them
Port Vale, Raith Rovers and Queen of The South: three teams that few people know of but not which towns they are in.
Perhaps a better word would have been interesting instead of oddly. Just looked at it from the angle that Newport is a Welsh club near us and we're discussing Port Vale. Had it been a regular 3rd/4th tier team like Walsall, Hartlepool etc (yes, plenty more I know) it wouldn't have been remotely interesting.
I wonder if Vale Park has stables? They got those horses on the pitch a bit sharpish when Nathan Blake equalised a few years back!!
