When is it going to end? It's such a waste of possession.
At least mix it up to keep the defenders thinking.
Middlesborough have been practising their long throws. There was a monster throw from Shotton shown on Sky mid match that landed in the penalty area and almost produced a goal. We will be Warnocked when we go up there!
Have we scored from one this season?
It’s not just about scoring from the throw in though is it? Allows the defence to push up, brings back the opposition etc
In the 60’s, (yes, rose tinted specs ), there was a competition for the longest throw. I’m not going to look it up, I’m going to try and remember it. I think, Ian Hutchinson (Chelsea) won it, our own Bobby Woodruff was second and Malcom MacDonald third. I could be totally wrong
Anyway, the beauty of Bobby’s throws, was that sometimes instead of just lobbing the ball into the area, he would jettison it just above head level at pace. My rose tinted specs, tell me that they created havoc.
Well that’s how I remember it and no one will ever change that
Woodruff's long throws did create havoc but many of the then fans around me thought he was in the team only because of his throw ins.
At times we have used the long throw too much, and with too little variation of direction or target (Mozzer).
But I did like it in the promotion season when we sometimes had the massed heavy artillery on the pitch - any one of which could chuck a bomb into the danger area - Gunnarsson, Morrison, Paterson and Halford! All the pretty boys were spluttering about 'anti football', but it terrified the opposition - and for a while it worked! And long throwers seem to have come into favour over the past few seasons - with most Championship and a clutch of Premier League clubs adding it to their repertoir.
Now two of our specialist far chuckers have gone, but Vaulks added to the list. A tradition to hang on to!
