He and his wife were on a cruise that I was on about five years ago.
We had a few beers together and he spoke passionately about playing for City and Wales.
Real nice guy.

He was a postman, delivered to my house a few times. He'd been diagnosed with dementia some time ago and so was very young by the standards of that desease - wasn't there an interview with him fairly recently when his wife mentioned that it may well have been heading a football that was responsible for his problem?
Keith Pontin was a no frills centreback who was one of the better players in the City side which struggled for much of the late seventies and early eighties in the old Second Division and he was good enough to have fitted into a side nearer the top of that league - his retirement from the professional game in his mid twenties came as a big shock at the time.

It could well have contributed to him heading of the ball leading to dementia. I mentioned about Brian Clark having the same diagnosis I know this because my wife runs a care home and she cared for Brian until he passed his father had the same fate, both true gentlemen.
Brian's wife Gill tried to get the FA to look into it deeper but I am not sure how far they got , I think when Jeff Astle died they started to ask questions as the old leather balls were much heavier when wet.
When I saw this thread I thought the worst but then that it couldn’t be as he is far too young.
This really is tragic and so sad. I remember him playing like it was yesterday :-(

Dementia is a horrible disease RIP .
Indeed , a horrible illness , lost my old man over 6 years to dementia .

Wow, that's very sad news. I don't know how old he was (I'm guessing early to mid 60's?) but obviously must have been suffering for several years already with the dementia. Seems likely that there will be a link to heading the ball as he was a defender. He was a constant in the City side from the late 70's - early 80's, just at the time I moved back to Wales and I was able to attend home games regularly, so I remember him well.
