Taking the politics out of it, does this mean there is another way to deal with Covid19? We have been told a vaccine is the only solution, and we must remain in lockdown until it is ready. So if they ramp up the production of these new experimental drugs can life get back to normal sooner, without being dependent on a working vaccine?
Not sure that is remotely true. As far as I can see most people fit into one of four groups:
i) not had coronavirus and won't ever get it
ii) had coronavirus and had short term mild symptoms or were asymptomatic. Unknown how long they are immune for.
iii) had coronavirus and had very difficult time of it but survived with no longer term effects or had coronavirus and have what is now being described as "long covid" where fatigue or other symptoms last 90 days plus.
iv) had coronavirus and died
This is a novel virus so initially, and now during the first winter, a lot of the concern is that we know it's potentially deadly and spreads rapidly but we don't know much else. Each passing month we are closer to living with it in relative safety because we understand it more and make different breakthroughs which are trialed to high enough standards that they are then mass produced.
Life will largely return to normal before a vaccine is available to everyone in the UK. The lockdown (from China to Sweden) was never about guaranteed safety but the risk was too high with too many unknowns and no way of protecting those who would have smallest chance of survival.
Exactly. The monoclonal antibody injection he received came from stock that was strictly reserved for those patients who are part of an on-going clinical trial. There is no way an ordinary mortal like you or I would have a sniff of a chance of being treated with it unless we were enrolled in the trial!
Maybe if everyone exposed to Covid 19 got the quality of medical attention enjoyed by Trump there may be a way of 'life getting back to normal sooner'. Or do you think extreme health inequality is part of 'normal'?
Then again, the more information that comes out about the experimental drugs taken by Trump (along with zinc, vitamin D and aspirin) the more the case is made for keeping the jury out for a while longer. There is still a lot unknown about the effectiveness and side effects of the anti-viral remdesivir (clinical trials still ongoing); but the steroid dexamethasone is especially interesting. Side effects range from 'aggression, mood swings, depression and nervousness to trouble with thinking, speaking and walking' (US Mayo Clinic). How will we ever know....?
Basically there are either preventative or curative options out there.
The preventative options seem to fall into three categories:
1) A vaccine;
2) The fabled herd immunity through a sizeable majority of the population mixing and building up the collective immunity to eliminate the virus (once the weakest in the herd take the consequences)
3) The various lockdown measures (masks, social distancing etc that we have been familiar with over the last 6 months)
The curative ones seem to be the plethora of drugs with different levels of maturity and medical provenance that treat people at various stages of infectivity. Trump seems to have been given a cocktail of these though he previously said that his personal physician administered a programme of hydroxochloroquine as some kind of preventative treatment).
The post you responded to talking about taking the politics out of this (yeah right) seems to be mashing the two elements together and suggesting that because Trump doing balcony and drive-by tours having been administered this cocktail (after supplemental oxygen) that the Western world will somehow rip off their masks and mingle in the shops, bars and streets because they think that they can get access to the same level of treatment that Trump did.
We already know that one of those drugs is being rationed by the NHS because of lack of supply, patent and prioritisation for the US.

he gets a lot of stick on here, but fair play that was impressive
The American people will get the president they deserve. Typically voter turn-out for presidential elections is 50% or less in most states so that means anti-Trump folk need to get off their backsides and vote Democrat otherwise they can look forward to another four years of desperate Don.
"We have been told a vaccine is the only solution, and we must remain in lockdown until it is ready."
"Not sure that is remotely true."
...here are some people who are concerned about impact of keeping lockdown saying this shouldn't be cover-all policy.
Can you show me who is saying we should keep lockdown until a vaccine?
