We used the nickname 'Mr Dimmy' but it was Dimascio ice cream van outside my school in the 1960s. I think they were based in Grangetown and the vans had a green and cream livery.
Yes, it was Mr Dimmy and there was a Mr Whippy as well wasn't there.
There's an ice cream van up here that you can set your watch by, he's always on our street at 6.15 every evening - he's missed a few days during lockdowns, but I've not known him be put off by bad weather, seven days a week, twelve months a year, he's there.
I'm a fan of Mackie's vanilla myself.
It's the closest ice cream to the unique flavour of Thayers.
Thayers called it dairy, not vanilla. I worked there as a kid, as did my brother, mother and 4 sisters, gorgeous ice cream

I built the upper floor extension to Thayers’ factory, Wentloog Rd in 1977. I’m sure we had some free ice cream from them. The old man, Thayer, was around then, I’d imagine he was the founder, he was in his 60s then I’d say. Saying that I was early 20s and anyone over 30 looked like they were in their 60s in those days
This article contains the recipe for Thayers original ice cream;-

Rum n raisin or blackcherry.
I was in Aberdyfi earlier this year. The ice cream i had up there was seriously top end
In the summer Walley's in royal Arcade do a lovely Madagascan vanilla and it still has the pods in it. It'd wonderful.
Other flavours there too of course but vanilla is my favourite.
You can't make grape flavoured icecream. Something to do with the high water content.
Cucumber icecream? That has a massive water content.
