Re: NOTTINGHAM FOREST v CARDIFF CITY. Match thread

Saturday, Covid willing, will see our 250th FA cup tie. Of the previous 249, we've won 98, lost 92 and drawn 59. Of the draws, we've won 26 replays, lost 26 and needed 7 2nd replays, the last against Millwall in 1987. We've lost our only 2 penalty shootouts in the FA cup, both to Reading (in the league cup, we've won every penalty shoot out bar one, bar bloody one......)

We've faced Arsenal and Manchester City most often, playing them 10 times each. Familiarity didn't lead to a good record. Despite 1 win over Man City and 2 over the Gunners, we lost 5 ties against both, making them the sides we've lost to most often. Next comes Leeds Utd, though they are also the side we've beaten in the FA cup most often, winning and losing 4. Much of that winning run comes from the late 1950s, when we won 3 successive 3rd round away ties by the same scoreline, 2-1.

We've played 96 different sides in the FA cup. Perhaps amazingly, we haven't played 25 sides currently in the football league. These include Blackpool, Bournemouth, Bradford City, Crystal Palace, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City, Newport County, Preston North End and Rotherham United.

Our biggest win was in 1931 against Enfield, who we would renew acquaintances with in the early 90s when they dumped us out of the cup once and forced us into a replay. The win was 8-0. We beat Chester 6-0 in 1998. We also managed three 4 goal wins; 6-2 vs Exeter in 1975, 5-1 vs The Gas in 2000 and 4-0 against Leyton Orient in 1931 (the round after the 8-0 against Enfield).

Our heaviest cup defeats were in 1929, losing 6-1 at Villa, and 1938, losing 5-0 at Charlton. We've lost 4-0 on two occasions, to Arsenal and Spurs in cup replays, in 2009 and 2007 respectively, both following 0-0 draws at Ninian Park.

We've conceded 3 goals at home on 9 occasions, to greats like Tottenham, Wolves, Dartford, Weymouth and Bath City. We've also won the cup once and made two other finals. Joys of the cup!!

        Referee: David Webb
Assistants: Rob Smith & Mark Cunliffe
        Fourth Official: Thomas Bramall

The game is being streamed live on BT Sport Extra 4 HD

Clubs are now able to name a maximum of nine substitutes of which five may be used.

Teams are permitted a maximum of three opportunities (excluding half time) to make substitutions during normal time, and with the ability to carry over any unused substitutes and make a further substitution should the tie progress to extra time.

All games level after 90 mins will have 30 mins extra time and then if needed penalties.
I know that I’ll probably be disappointed but I’m looking forward to what a should be a good game: all to play for without the pressure of dropping points (no point in sitting back and playing negatively), all the available players should be well rested, and maybe we’ll see something/somebody new?

What could possibly go wrong? :-/

          Phillips

          Bacuna
Vaulks (if he can successfully shift to CB then allows us to bring in new midfielder this summer and reduces pressure to bring in new CB - hence the defence not changing significantly).
          Nelson
          Bagan

          Pack
          Patten

          Whyte
          Murphy
          Hoilett

          Glatzel

I assume Cunningham will play. I'm not sure if Sam Bowen is back with us now Barry aren't playing, I think he'd be ahead of Patten if he is, but I'm all for a new face in central midfield either way, I'm with you there. Could be an interesting line-up.

Be nice to see a couple of the u23 players, but I think Harris will want to win and keep changes to a minimum. He's got a couple of calls to make as it is.

Margetson or Oliver Denham seem to be the most likely candidates to come in at centreback if we're looking outside the first team squad. However, I reckon someone like Cunningham or Vaulks will play there. Whether we pick our strongest available team or not is a tough one to judge - based on Neil Harris' pre game comments about the competition, it seems unlikely, but our manager definitely needs a win.

Phillips starts in goal. Bagan also in the XI.

Rest of side is first team
