Labour are not finished, nor will be, in Wales. The Party can make a mess of many things but will still be elected. Even nationally Labour will have a chance in 4 years time as the Tories will lose popularity as a result of COVID unless they get the vaccination programme right.

The 2008 financial crisis ruined Labour even though in hindsight they handled the crisis reasonably well. COVID may well turn out to be the Tories equivalent.

I think I'm right in saying he was elected leader and effectively Prime Minister with just 90000 votes. Doesn't seem right to me.

It is equally baffling why the Tories voted Johnson as Leader, why the Labour Party voted for Corbyn (and now Starmer) and in the USA why the public voted for Trump. There is something odd going on in political parties as to why they vote for such unsuitable leaders.

As for the voting system I think if you look back in history more people voted for the Tories than Labour even when Labour won elections. It's the system.

Interesting the Tories are keen to allow country by country comparisons on vaccines but not on COVID deaths...:sherlock:

I dont think that's happened very often. It's certainly going to be a hell of a lot harder for Labour to win with the new 600 seats.

I just don't think it will, the Tories are still at 40% in spite of the constant feck ups, the boundaries have been redrawn cutting Wales' seats by 8 and would see the Tories gain 10 with Labour losing 9. The Conservative vote in the south of England & outside the cities is so strong its highly unlikely Labour will make any inroads. Labour's only realistic route into power is in coalition with the SNP which they know will trigger another referendum and likely secession. The Conservatives are backed by most of our media, any ideas that are even broadly left of centre are ridiculed and deemed as the "loony left", whilst scandals are just allowed to happen without any repercussions for the ruling party.

Added to this is that the Conservatives are an election winning machine. In all likelihood Johnson won't last until the next election when someone relatively "clean" comes in after being hyped up by the press and Starmer will be painted as a far left, authoritarian anti democracy judge part of a metropolitan London elite. I just can't see a Labour government in the near future

I beleive the have cancelled or at least posponed the reduction to 600, for the next election anyway. But the boundary commission will reducve labours chances of winning an election.

Another thread hijacked by the lefties to do a bit of Tory bashing. I thought that this was a football supporters forum and for the avoidance of doubt, anyone doesn't have to be a raving left wing socialist to follow City or enjoy football but anyone who remotely indicates they might not be of that persuasion is continually attacked.

Brilliantly put. Sludge is a right wing apologist if he's advocating a Centrist (right wing in most languages) Party in place of Labour.

A socialist government which I want is never going to get elected in this country so we need to flush the labour and Liberal parties down the bogs and form a new centre left democratic alliance to keep the tories out

That's right but that's not the statistic that counts. More people voted Tory than Labour. The only way to change that is to change the voting system along the lines of the BREXIT referendum but even then the Tories would be the most likely Party to win. However, Labour supporters shouldn't give up on Labour just yet as the political landscape may well change in 4 years time especially if Johnson remains in post.

Just scrolled through Wikipedia to see if it's true, and it was the case in Feb 74 and 1929, but not for any others.

In 1951 labour got more of the vote but the Tories won.
