Basically 4 rings on a bit of metal at waist height?
I never use the oven
It may as well be locked

Induction hob is the way to go
Probably have to buy new induction friendly pans tho
Absolutely.
Cast Iron pans are best but heavy.
Stainless Steel can be good but should be 18/10 grade.
Specially treated aluminium can be used but it is a bit hit and miss. Our first set was supposedly induction grade aluminium and a couple of them didn't work.
You need to make sure the bottom of the pan is magnetic.
We have a set of Tefal 'Jamie Oliver' Stainless Steel pans which are excellent. Cost £100 for two frying Pans two saucepans and a Stewpot. Only had them a couple of months but they have been excellent so far
I'm a bit worried how Jamie Oliver is coping though........
So can these things just be taken out of the box , put on top of my kitchen unit and plugged in and away we go or do would it have to be fitted in and wired ?

I never , ever cook in the oven , its just standing there , looking at me like a useless white slab of metal
You can get Hobnobs
I think the question is can you still get cookers with hobs and ovens?
Seems incredibly old fashioned now.
You could try this, plug in a go

Ikea used to sell an 'all-in-one' unit, with a sink, two-ring hob and a fridge all contained in one unit, and all running off one 3-pin plug. A brilliant bit of kit, for bedsits, work units, etc.
