Can't understand all the fuss about Poly Styrene - a very short-lived (career-wise) minor player in a huge movement. Two decent singles doesn't make you a rock god.
Thanks. It was certainly fun. I can remember a demo being organised in central London against the rise of Fascism in the UK, during the late 70's, and my old man on the phone rowing with somebody high up in Sinn Fein who were having a demo in London on the same day. Sinn Fein wanted The Anti Fascist demo cancelled as they didn't want the focus taken away from their demo.
Another occasion was when my old man was going to do an interview, feature, with Meibion Glyndwr. They had all these terms and conditions like being blind folded, picked up on a dirt track etc. I was only a kid but i recall the old man saying to them. 'I aint got time for all that crap'
And last but not least, the old man duping me into dropping him off outside Allan Beshellas house in Maesteg and the old man banging his door and demanding Beshella come out and face him if he thinks that he's a member of the master race (Beshella was a member of the KKK) needless to say, the locals were out as well as the local press. He was an absolute loon
I was arrested there, really early on before it all kicked off. I was with the ANL blocking the route that the NF wanted to take. The police formed up and marched up to us and arrested the first people they came to, I happened to be one. I was charged with obstructing PC Francis Crocker in the course of his duty. It was later changed to obstructing the public highway. I was fined £10 in the juvenile court. In his statement to the court PC Crocker said he asked me to move but I refused. I pointed that he didn't ask me to move, he just arrested me and even if he had asked me to move there was nowhere I could go, there were a few 1000 ANL packed behind me and a few ranks of police in front of me. It made no difference to the magistrate, he still found me guilty.
While the riot was going on I spent the afternoon and early evening being "processed". There was whole stream of people being brought in as the afternoon wore on.
My old man was arrested as well, charged with incitement i think, although he got off in court. Good on you for turning out and sending the racist scum bags on their way. I was sat in a cafe half a mile away drinking a banana milkshake ( i was five years old) My mother has some fantastic photos of that day somewhere.
If i wasn't on a demo, then i was watching The City with him, or down Barry with my mum The day Dianna and charlie got married, my old man along with the SWP organised a day trip to the gower in order to get away from the street parties and general jingoistic behaviour. It was great, a load of University students joined us and there was a bit of weed and booze going about, they decided to strip off naked on the beach. ****ing massive bonus for a ten year old boy, back then they didn't shave, it was like a magpies nest
I don't have any of my badges now, but as well as RAR, I had a "Stuff the Jubilee" badge for Mrs Windsor's do in 1977 and in 1979 I had a "Don't Blame Me, I Voted Labour" badge. This was despite the fact that my 18th birthday was a few days after the election so I didn't get to vote.
Richard M did you go to Rock Against racism gig in London around that time (1978)
