    Re: What music gets to you at a sad time

    Myfanwy - memories of my late mother.

    The second verse of the hymn "How great thou art":

    When through the woods and forest glades I wander
    And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
    When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
    And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze

    Although my father died 25 years ago I still cannot sing this verse as I get a lump in my throat. It brings back so many memories.

        although she was not awake i think she was aware of music,
        i played "you are my sunshine" over and over cos she always laughed at the extra "when skys are gray" we added at City matches
        that and Fix You by coldplay

          “When I am Laid in Earth” also known as Dido’s Lament from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Purcell. Often played in instrumental form on occasions such as Remembrance Day but not anywhere near as moving when sung. I also remember seeing on TV Grace Kelly’s funeral in 1982 with Prince Rainier sitting on his own with tears streaming down his face whilst an orchestra played Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Very moving.

                Didn’t recognise this tune so went straight to google.

                Thank you so much for making me aware of such a stunning piece of music.

                Aside from the classical version I found a very moving interpretation by Annie Lennox with the City of London choir.

                Made my Sunday morning .

                  Oddly enough I thought of Annie Lennox when this thread came up. Her "Hurting Time" gets me every time.

                      Heard this yrs ago. A bit obscure but the words have such meaning to them. Any Dad who has a son can feel the pain in the lyrics.

                                Joe Walsh's 'Song For Emma'. It's about his three year-old daughter who was killed in a car accident.
