Why not just not open the thread?

I always find people who “don’t want politics” in sport are the ones who’s “politics” are being called into question.

I think taking a knee has raised awareness of the situation quite well. The fact it’s still being discussed shows it’s doing it’s job. It might be time to end it sooner or later but it’s still working now.

Also after your ongoing posts in the coronavirus thread I don’t know how you can call anyone a dimwit.

And since when did not being racist become a political topic?

There seems to be a disingenuous attempt by some to link the political group Black Lives Matter with the tacking a knee.

Plus there seems to be an attempt by some to misinterpret the “defund the police” statement to be something it isn’t either due to ignorance or to want to undermine any anti racist message.

I'm with Bluetit: we don't want to get to the end of the internet before kick-off.

Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha says players "should stand tall" and taking the knee is "becoming something we just do".

Rumours Brentford will not be taking the knee in the Premiership.

Croatia are saying the same for the Euro's , both refer to the alleged no politics rules in football , and its long-term ineffectiveness , as per Zaha point and decision ?

I don't agree with Zaha and don't think what he says is powerful at all. "Taking the knee" I think began with Colin Kapernick who did it while the US national anthem played. The point being you're supposed to stand reverentially. Not doing so was very, very powerful. Kapernick (partially at least) lost his career for his actions. He is to be lauded for his bravery. Zaha is of course completely entitled to do as he likes. I always feel a sense of optimism when sports people protest racism (in whatever form) and extreme pessimism when people boo.

Football and politics will always be intertwined, no getting away from the fact. Cheap get out line for them, the far right, who, let’s not kid ourselves are the shit stirrers in this situation, have attempted to peddle their political filth to football fans for years. They’ve been rightly silenced in more recent years, their odious songs, monkey noises and ignorant behaviour being eradicated with the threat of stadium bans, prosecution etc. This booing is in their eyes a legitimate way of showing their true colours, us proper fans, when back in the grounds, should make our feelings known to them if they start their shite. Leopards don’t change their spots, their racism is still bubbling below the surface, we should be on our guard, we can’t go back to the bad old days.

The rightwingers who condemn the players’ anti-racism protest are clearly people who don’t even like football, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

I got into a debate about it on the other board.

Some interesting debates. And some rancid views.

One thing I find absolutely laughable is that
people are claiming that the players are now supporting and implementing a socialist agenda...(oh that it were true!)

                        Footballers.. socialists... Lol.

Football has become the epitome of capitalism and players probably don't even know what socialism is.

Imagine being allowed to watch live football for the first time in over 18 months and the first thing you do is boo your own players for a gesture which is attempting to unite against racism.. before they have even kicked a ball. what an abysmal thing to do.

                        Talk about snowflakes..

So what if the players take the knee. Even if fans think it's little more than tokenism, it's the players choice.

If it's more offensive to someone when players take the knee than it is when players receive ongoing aggressive racist abuse and threats, it shows how stupid people are.

The problem with your sensible and reasoned approach is that people who fervently support booing the taking of the knee ........something I support but would not object to if it ended .....are fecking stupid racists

They can argue its run its course , its bringing politics into football , its Marxist etc as long until they are blue in the face but they are racists and when you hit them in the face with that they either admit it or make all sorts of excuses to try and slip their way out of it .

Educated debate is fine but booing players for taking the knee ? Naaa

                              Yeah.

Some people on the other board proved that.

And they are often in denial of the facts... taking the knee, while gained support after George Floyds murder, was started in 2016 by Colin Kaepernick, who is no Marxist activist, just an American Football player who peacefully demonstrated against the continued persecution of black people at the hands of the police - which is demonstrably proven.

Is football becoming more political or is politics becoming more like football?

The absolute certainty applied when Player X is described as a diving cheat and Player Y was travelling at speed so even slightest touch would send them over (depending on whether it's your side or not) is now more obvious in politics and topical debates.
