West Germany had a more legitimate reason for the 1966 final to be replayed because England's third goal should never have been allowed. I've yet to see any picture that shows the ball to be completely over the line. Before anyone mentions the fourth goal, the Germans went all out for an equaliser and left themselves short at the back.

Let's be honest, Southgate messed up. He handed the second half to Italy, when instead he should have been taking it to them. The tactics were wrong, and he made no effort to change them until it was too late. The substitutions were wrong, and at the wrong time, and the choice of penalty takers was bizarre, to say the very least. Yes, Italy played well, but England rolled over and let them.

The clue is in the famous ommentary-
"some people are on the pitch..."
Surely the ref should have stopped play there and then - before the shot at goal, then restart with a dropped ball when the invaders were cleared.
