    Nice UK City/Town For a Weekend ?

Any recommendations ? Ive more or less given up with the idea of getting abroad this year, unless things drastically change. Even the green listers seem as if it's too much of a 'potch' to get to and get back from. So decided on some cheap Premier inn type breaks, so far I've just got Lincoln on the list, any one recommend any others ?

Tewkesbury a really compact town with an interesting history, an active Abbey, lots of historic buildings, alleyways etc. The last battle of the War of the Roses was fought there. The rivers Severn and Avon merge there.

Premier Inn on outskirts, but in centre is Royal Hop Pole Hotel ( Wetherspoon pub with rooms). and The Bell Inn ( Greene King). Cheltenham 20 mins away and Gloucester 30mins.

Winchester equally interesting. I think there is a Premier Inn or equivalent there.

The dockyard in Portsmouth is worth a visit. HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, The Mary Rose a trip up the Spinnaker Tower, plus plenty of other stuff not too far away.

Depends on what your after really
Commercialised shopping, chain pubs and familiar dining then Manchester City centre is very well equipped. Took the wife there in place of a couple of failed holidays in June when it was semi restricted and had a great time.

I love Glasgow as a city. Edinburgh always gets the tourism but Glasgow is a fab place.

The Cotswolds. Beautiful villages to walk through, great pubs and eateries and great places of interest, such as Snowshill Manor, Broadway, etc.

Cirencester has a Premier Inn now. Good base for exploring The Cotswolds.

Beautiful beaches, shit fairground, morrisons, Asda, home bargains, close to the capitol city of Wales and Cardiff Airport. Approximately 6 miles from the best pub in Wales, the canton Cross.

theres a wetherspoons hotel in chepstow too, and in Okehampton, both nice little towns to visit for a day or two. Okehampton is on the edge of Dartmoor.
Ive stayed in Wetherspoon hotel whilst working and the y are better than Premier in my opinion.

Chester is quite interesting too, as is York, which also has the National Steam engine museum. Not for the missus though maybe.
Coventry has the Birish car mueseum which is intersting but not much else. Chicester and Arundel are both OK specially if you like going out walking.

I lived in Lincoln for nearly 40 years and your instinct to have it on your list is a sound one, you'll love it.
Sometimes after being in Cardiff for a match/break I used to stopover at The Royal Hop Pole in Tewkesbury and I can thoroughly recommend there too, if you want to break up your journey.

    Peterborough.
Go up every year as I am tomorrow for 2 days with a load of mates for the game as this year's beer festival has been cancelled.
Great cathedral to look at and nice walks around the canals, plenty of real ale pubs, Charters bar is amazing.
Floating massive barge with a massive bavarian style beer garden with live music played outside on a stage every weekend during summer

I don't know what counts as 'nice' but our next two city breaks will be returns to Belfast and Glasgow. Both fascinating cities.

But for a weekend - especially from Cardiff - probably not great options. You would spend most of the time travelling.

Buxton is a lovely town with lots of nice places to eat/stay. Plus it is a short drive from some other places that are worth a visit such as Bakewell, the aforementioned Matlock (and Matlock Bath) as well as plenty of other tourist attractions - see here - https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attrac...e_England.html . Have a look at Buxton Opera House as well as depending when you are planning your trip there may be something worth watching there as they have a lot of diverse entertainment on there.

Belfast is truly fascinating, but for some of us its for all the wrong reasons.

Some really good suggestions on here, thanks, I am 'fortunate' to have worked and visited most of the big name cities, but keen to explore the Jurasic coast and the Cotswolds. We like a nice 'reserved' (non rowdy) night scene, good eateries and nice places to look around during the day even if we do have to travel a bit.

Others who may be looking for similar I agree that Belfast makes for a great break, I prefer Edinburgh to Glasgow, but Inverness also makes a great base for discovering the Highlands and Skye. i also want to go to the Hebrides, the Channel Islands and the Faroe Islands (I know its not UK).but its so, so expensive.
