  • Apologise to Thatcher socialists!

She was the first to implement the closing of the money losing industry and global warming stuff.

    "Maggie closed our mines".
Facking good I say, who the fack wanted to work down those sh it holes?
Can you imagine if she kept em open? What with all the where there's a blame there's a claim culture?

Maggie had a roasting for something that is now , rightly, celebrated

Countries pledge to shift away from coal and end fossil fuel financing, but key players are missing.

Worst and crappest attempt of a bite ever.

The last roasting Thatcher had has seen her end up in an urn. Some did celebrate.

Brilliant how she had the foresight to replace them with long term employment in other fields and 40 years later the ex mining communities are thriving, hardly any unemployment, most people as fit as a fiddle, hardship eradicated & benefits hardly required. Brilliant long term planning.........Nah, she was a c*nt of the highest order, a horror & witch of a woman.

            Bollocks!

Shutting the mines was all about revenge after the unions effetively brought down the Heath government.

She knew how Scargill would react to closures, so built up stocks then the closure program was "leaked" to provoke him.

Lots of people who were not socialists hated Thatcher and with good reason

              It wasn't just the mines

She flogged off the council houses

Privatised the trains , gas , electricity etc

Fecked up social care completely .......vulnerable people are now looked after by people with very little workers rights , on low pay etc

Brought private sector nonsense into the NHS

              Dreadful woman

why let facts get in the way of dogma and rhetoric

1929 there were 250,000 working the mines
1979 there were 25,000 working the mines

the South Wales coal fields were losing 5,000 miners every year. Based on that run rate the mines were due to stop production in 1984.

What killed the mining industry was not Thatcher, but the Royal Navy's switch to diesel engines in the 1920s and 1930s.

The Valleys had little population before the Bute's exploited its natural resource. The entire Valleys community was build around extracting coal and once that stopped then given the topography there was little other industry that could take its place.

All miners were offered the chance to retrain, some did, others did not.

Why are we even having this debate today. We all know coal is a dirty polluter and who in their right mind thinks sending someone underground is a sensible way to live.

                Political bollocks, nothing more.

                    Re: Apologise to Thatcher socialists!

I was a mere twinkle in my father's eye when Thatcher was elected but I've come to view her as something necessary, who's time came, and went, to suit the country's needs at the time. Just like Churchill, Attlee, Blair and just as will be so for Johnson. That's not to say get policies didn't cause hardship for many, because they did.

Personally I neither admire nor hate her.

My understanding is there is good reason she was elected in 1979, and the country faced enormous problems at that time.

What's more, most, ' Thatcherite' changes were global structural shifts. Didn't all countries weaken union rights at this time? Didn't all western countries see industrialisation? Didnt all countries liberalise the economies? Didn't the EEC before the EU require it? They did, of all members.

Of course, how you do it is what counts, and the accusation is she left communities to rot. This happened across the UK though and yet it is our mining communities in South Wales that suffered the worst legacies.

                    Why is that? Geography? Governance?

We can't keep blaming a woman elected 42 years ago, that's a disservice to our kids IMO. Need to look to the future and I think the Valleys is a beautiful place, and those with good transport links can be powerhouses again. Those without can become more rural.

Who would you have rather been prime minister in those periods? How do you think they would have dealt with the challenges posed?

Just checked and I'm pleased to say I'm in the real world.

Margaret Thatcher, the "Iron Lady" of British politics who died Monday at the age of 87, is being lionized as the woman who tilted British domestic and economic policy to the right.

Less noted is how seriously she viewed the threat of climate change and the robustness, more than 20 years ago, of climate science and United Nations body tasked with assessing state of that science.

In a 1990 speech at the second World Climate Conference, in Geneva, Thatcher compared the threat of global warming to the Gulf War, which was then just escalating following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.
