Lord Hayward pins the rising cost of living crisis on Ukraine

Says it will be seen by voters as "part of what we're paying for a fight for democracy".

It'll be their excuse for everything now. Very handy for them. Keeps Johnson's misdemeanors off the front pages too, and gives his and Truss's personal photographers plenty of photo opportunities as they pretend they're "leading the free world". I bet they're loving it.

Load of bollocks. Apart from oil things were going up in price long before Ukraine.

Re: Lord Hayward pins the rising cost of living crisis on Ukraine

Crude oil prices bottomed out in May 2020 and have been going up ever since.

Complete and utter nonsense. Whilst the war in Ukraine is a contributory factor for the current situation, there are many other factors at play.

What a surprise some are trying to change the narrative.

    Ah I see now.
The cost of living crisis has only been going on for just over 3 weeks.

Surprised Brexit isn't being blamed .

As a consequence of the move away from Fossil fuels , wasn't this going to happen anyway?

Putin must be crying with laughter, UK food prices rising, energy prices rising, more work from home, multiple car restrictions, flight restrictions, all from the comfort of his armchair.

What do you mean it was going to happen anyway?

But he's a lord! surely we should pay some respect to this mans pain and suffering in obtaining a lordship. It's not easy you know.

Maybe he doesn't "know full bloody well", maybe he only has that opinion. As I suspect do you.

Not as much as the Labour Party.

He’s also a rugby referee, he must be very intelligent if he understands the laws of that unfathomable game.

Re: Lord Hayward pins the rising cost of living crisis on Ukraine

This thread starts with a distortive headline.

Hayward is a respected Tory pollster with a decent record in predicting electoral outcomes. Here he made the, in my view, reasonable argument that if the Ukraine invasion and conflict is still going on in May, voters may be less inclined to punish the Tory Party at the polls. Conversely if it isn't then the National Insurance rises, energy increases etc will come more into focus as domestically driven.

Obviously if you have a strong track record in swallowing and regurgitating Russian talking points and/or want to further the drivel that the invasion/commodity rises et al are all part of the plan under the 2021/22 Conspiracy Theory Ballon D'Or winner, The Great Reset, then you may have cause to be a fast and loose with the facts.

Is he a pollster? Isn't that Lord Ashcroft?

There's a very subtle line between simply commenting that it might be what happens and doing your bit to make sure that's exactly what the narrative is though. Mention it enough enough times in whatever context and people will start to believe it's true. Let's see how the rest of the Tory party play it over the next few weeks.

I don't think any of the above comments are regurgitating Russian talking points or claiming that it's all part of the Great Reset. They're just saying that it's out of order to lie about the cost of living crisis and blame it all on the invasion of Ukraine.

This is true. But a significant amount of agricultural product comes from the Ukraine. I'd expect the lack of grain exports to have an inflationary impact on food prices over and above the pre-existing inflation.

Actually that would be a good thread, how do you imagine other posters? I can't be arsed to start it right now though

Re: Lord Hayward pins the rising cost of living crisis on Ukraine

No sooner did the Tory poll analyst Lord Hayward predict that the electorate would forgive the Tory Party for the cost of living rises if the Ukraine crisis is still ongoing near the May elections than the Chancellor starts his Spring statement blaming most of the cost of living rises on the Ukraine crisis. Politics is spooky sometimes!
