Thread: Mainz FC

    Mainz FC

They were awarded three second half penalties in their game this weekend and three different players scored from them. This means that they have now scored their last thirty six Bundesliga penalties dating back to 2013 - that’s a remarkable record, I reckon most teams struggle get to ten consecutive penalties scored.

LeTissier missed 1 out of 49 for Southampton, so I wonder what his longest streak (of the 2) was?
Also did anyone else take a penalty for Southampton during his time, and were any missed?

You can always rely on Germans to take good penalties

We had penalties in consecutive games away at Brentford and Reading towards the end of last season.

Yes, against Barnet in front of nearly twenty thousand at Ninian Park. I think Pikey took about eighteen penalties for us and, going back further, Ronnie Bird took one or two less than that and missed just the one, against the Jacks as it turned out. They didn’t take many for us, but I loved the completely different ways Peter Thorne and Keiffer Moore took penalties, but the player who never looked like missing was Robbie Fowler - he didn’t do much for us, but his penalties were a clue as to why he was such a brilliant finisher at his best.

statistically it is an interesting problem, who is better, someone who has scored 15 without missing? or someone who has scored 50 and missed 2 or 3?

this article attempts to work out the answer to that...

Whenever Whitts stepped up to take a penalty in a shoot out, I was about ten times more confident he'd score than any of his team mates, but the truth is he missed four penalties for us (three in 10/11 against Millwall, Barnsley and Palace and one in 14/15 at Norwich) and two more (v the wurzels and West Brom) where he knocked in rebounds after the keeper had saved his initial effort. I listed a few very good City penalty takes in my previous post in this thread, but, despite that fallibility, I think I'd still have Whitts to take a penalty when the pressure was at its greatest.

yes, I suppose something that analysis doesn't take into account is how much was at stake for each penalty.
some players will score penalties all day long, untill they're in a penalty shootout and then they go to pieces. I don't think Whitts would have been affected by that kind of pressure

Kenny Miller was someone who you would have thought would have been better in a penalty shoot out than
he turned out to be for us.

Was it Steve Maclean that we signed from Stoke who had a 100% record from the spot until he signed for us and missed a last minute one on his debut for us….against Stoke

Whitts was a natural penalty taker. He could put it anywhere. He was so laid back he could barely be bothered to celebrate when he scored.

One of Dave Jones' rare moments of genius was to make Whitts penalty taker. Once he started to hit the back of the net with spot kicks he became more confident and hungry to score other goals.
