Yup, and it's going to take something huge to change that culture. Even now I hate speaking to someone and they don't he old "yeah that happened to me "....then go all out speaking about themselves.

Really doesn't help. Let people speak, it's needed more at times than someone telling you how to control your situation.

That's a great way to be with your son, you won't lose it, he'll be back when he needs it again is till do with my dad but he may not know I exist for months on end, we're all busy in our own lives I suppose.
