Apparently my mums side was researched by my auntie and showed a base in the east End of London going back several centuries, which is quite impressive given the amount that area has always changed.

Considering infidelity and secret adoptions throughout history many people are probably barking up wrong trees.

Yup, I’ve around 3,000 people in the tree currently. It’s taken me around 15 years to do but I only do it for short spells at a time. Some branches go back to the 1500s others stop dead 3 or 4 generations ago.

I'm 75% Welsh, the other 25% has Durham roots as my G Grandfather moved to Splott from Consett when the steel works opened. The most difficult part on the Welsh side are the surnames. My family are predominantly Williams & Evans, which covers about 25% of the population in the 18th & 19th century.

My dad managed to get back over 300 years by trawling around parish records and Somerset House - in the days before t'internet.

My favourite ancestor was Black Matt - a bigamist and sheep rustler from the Somerset Levels. His sons moved to Cardiff to work on the docks. A branch of distant cousins became brewers and invented the device for measuring specific gravity of alcohol.

My dad did a bit about 40 years ago.
I remember going to Somerset House with him as a kid. His side of the family moved to Cardiff around 1900 from Dorset and I remember spending what appeared to be half a family holiday in Dorchester trawling through births, deaths and marriage records.
Traced that line back to the 16th / 17th century if I recall.
