Just found out that Nichelle Nichols passed away on July 30.
Haven't seen it reported anywhere until now.
She was the first black woman to have a leading role in a TV seriies, and took part in the first inter-racial on-screen kiss when Captain Kirk and Uhura kissed in an episode of Star Trek.
She had considered quitting the role, but was persuaded to stay by none other than Martin Luther King.

I was never a Trekkie but I did see her character in the series have a large and very protruding earpiece, which seemed to be a serious health and safety concern when the Enterprise was being severely shaken when hurling at warp factor seven.
Were her last words “Beam me up Scottie?” She fitted in very well in Star Trek R.I.P.
Guess space is the final frontier for her
A local hero passed away, maybe they should erect a statue for hm.
