They would have done the right thing, which is to cap what the energy companies are allowed to charge across the board, so per kilowatt etc.
This is what Truss would have done if she truly gave a shit about the poorer people in society but she doesn't.
She'll be taking a nice big backhander from the energy companies for looking after them and ensuring they can make an absolute killing.
It's effectively corruption in my eyes. This shit should be illegal.
You are just talking nonsense at this stage.

I'm telling you, my bills will be practically free this winter and then capped, whereas they could have risen about 40%.

My kids mum gets Universal credit. She gets £1050, cheaper bills than last winter and then the cap just announced.

    Stop lying.

    You are basically lying.
The £66 a month is a loan no? You’ll be paying it back at some point.
And below the market cap is still double what it was a year ago.

This seems grossly unfair when certain people and companies are making obscene amounts of money out of this situation - the lack of a windfall tax appears to be based on nothing more than dogma.
Companies will be paying tax on those profits. Much greater income than last year. The problem is partly that you pay taxes after profits, so you have to wait for accounts, whereas action was needed in time for winter.

    No.

And yes, fuel is expensive. There is a war on ffs and the west have slapped sanctions on Russia.

People need to live in the real world and deal with Real Politik situations here.

Before today households and businesses were facing absolute disaster. Now they aren't.

You're a dyed in the wool Tory tit James.
There's not a single act the Tory party could do that you wouldn't support.
If you can't see this for what it really is, I'm lost for further words.

    Now some aren’t*

Bills are a huge chunk of our expenses for my place of work. If they double we go out of business.

No, I'm a pragmatist and I see an announcement which is an enormous intervention in the energy market to mitigate for the effects of a war to ensure that people don't face devastation this winter.

That all you and others can do is moan and find fault says it all - limited concern for the people in question, all about party politics and a desire to moan.

    Wrong.
It's about a government needing to help the people who need help the most.
People on benefits will now suffer the most and suffer, they certainly will.
Liz has already made it clear that she has no love or care for anyone claiming benefits though so it comes as no shock whatsoever.
I feel for the elderly. She clearly doesn't.

First, well done to Liz Truss on taking immediate action. Boris could and should have done something but too busy writing his book in time for Christmas.
Secondly there seems to be a misconception about who and what ' we're going to have pay back means'. Of the £870billion that is the annual tax take by government, less than a quarter ( £208b) comes from income tax. In fact nearly half the UK adult population pay no income tax. The majority of the tax take is from business, particularly corporation tax on profits. Business needs a stable environment if it's going to invest in UK and surprise windfall taxes might give short term gain at the cost of future investment.
Another fact not generally aired is about the wealthy fat cats ( I'm not one). This 1% of the population pay nearly a third of the UK income tax.
I don't want a load of bullshit about me being a tory etc etc..I'm just laying out the facts

People aren’t coping now and the typical household is going to have to find an extra £40 plus a month before the Government loan kicks in.

Again, you are just plain wrong. Universal Credit recipients are getting £750 extra that others are not. Given that poorer people disproportionately pay more on bills, then they were most at risk from huge rises in bills.

What you are saying is just incorrect.

Do we call all government borrowing a loan now? Isn't this what you wanted for the last decade to avoid austerity?

    Check your facts.
Not all UC claimants get that £750.
Those that don't will suffer greatly.

The energy price cap will operate so the unit price for gas/electric will be set so that the average user will pay around £2500 a year. Use more and you'll pay more, use less and you'll pay less

    Re: Energy Prices

Socialising the losses as usual. Energy companies will continue to make massive profits, shareholders will be paid the same dividends. We continue to pay inflated energy prices but we’ll also have to pay the loans back for the rest our lives.

It’s much better than nothing but anyone seeing this as a complete positive must be pretty dim or biased.

Isn’t it a fact though that the gap between richest and poorest has grown (I won’t use the word exponentially) for the last twelve years and continues to grow? I don’t like the new fangled term optics, but I’ll use it this time - in the context of the cost of living crisis, the optics of what is essentially the Government trying to justify the rich getting richer is terrible

Some people's circumstances do not afford them the luxury of making that choice.

You make a good point and I do think that's the case. Many people though think of the rich as from inherited wealth or big business fat cats. In fact many who have made obscene amounts of money have done it because the likes of you and I are willing to spend our money to support them..be it pop stars, film stars....or football stars.

I'm not denying that. Just saying the situation is a lot better than it was yesterday for most people

Apologies, it is £650, not £750. Which is on top of the £66 off bills a month.

It states here that anyone on the following will receive it:

    Universal Credit
    income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
    Income Support
    Pension Credit
    Child Tax Credit
    Working Tax Credit

Poorer households absolutely ARE getting more support than wealthier. It's completely untrue to claim otherwise.

People on contributions based legacy benefits DO NOT get a penny, and that's a lot of people!
That is TRUE you dyed in the wool Tory fan, not lies.

    Re: Energy Prices

I wish government would simply publish the cost per kWh so we can all calculate exactly what each of us will pay, based on our historical energy usage. I know we use 3400 (+/- 200) kWh of electricity every year, so a simple calculation will tell me what to expect. The crazy thing is that this cost per kWh should be capped but won't be as it all depends on what tariff you are on and what supplier you are with. In fact those who have secured a fixed rate for the next year or so could now be worse off!

You said "People on benefits will now suffer the most" That is absolutely not true. There is significantly more assistance for people on benefits, and rightly so.

Why (if not presumably for your own party political gain) would you spread mistruths like that? It just increases anxiety for people.

    Re: Energy Prices

I can't understand why some are jumping for joy, were all gonna be paying even more when the new price cap sinks in.At the moment the cap is just under 2 grand so the money awarded to the most needy was based on an out of date cap so how anyone can think we'll be better off is wrong. If your really struggling now this does FA for you.
