    Long live The Royal Mint

Re: Reports of the demise of cash premature?

Some places (like pubs and small shops) prefer cards because it reduces the opportunity for staff fraud, and it also reduces their bank charges (banking cash regularly is an expensive business in itself). The opposite view is that some places don't want to pay the charges on a card reader, and also like to 'stash the cash'.

Had a bit of a blast from the past on the weekend. Had to pick up a bet from Paddy power Friday night, so thought I'd pay for my beers in cash. Picked my jeans up on Saturday morning and had about £40 in coins drop all over the floor.

People are starting to realise, it’s too easy spending your money with a card.

If you go out with £40, you can only spend £40
There’s a place for it but as a member of the real world I promise you cash is definitely not king anymore

Just keep in mind the next generation digital cash in your real world will be programmable, just like it is in China

In my world it is, very rarely pay anything by card, in fact I think it’s only if I buy a pint at the football where there’s no choice. Last time I checked I’m still a member of the real world.

Fair enough but you never buy a pint at the football

Not using Just Eat puts them at a disadvantage as many of their competitors do, so they're stuck between the devil and deep blue sea.
Now there is something I really don't understand, why people use Just Eat.

Go direct to a place that delivers for half the price!

Was in the Rumney Balti on New Road a few years back and the servers were thanking people for going to the shop and buying direct.

Many of us remember actually being served at the counter by shop assistants who actually got your goods for you. The way it’s going it won’t be long before the customer is bringing the goods out of the stockrooms on pallet trucks and stacking the shelves themselves.

Scrap the self serve tills, employ more human beings to work the check outs. All this beep beep, pay by card nonsense is turning people into thickoes. Bar staff who can’t add up or subtract is widespread now, ridiculous.
There’s stores in London now whereby you register your card, walk in get your groceries and walk out, no tills no nothing just a receipt by email...cashless in 10 years.

The ‘lifters have been doing that for years in Cardiff, no card, no receipt

Nah, if you don't have any on you, you get cash out from Spar just outside.

I wouldn't be able to do my usual Thursday night dances in the gay club if it wasn't for cash.

I think it very wrong that 'lifters are discriminated against in that way. I mean what if the items they pinched turned out to be faulty; how on Earth could they exchange them?

Yet another reason not to use them - can't stand coffee.

I haven't paid for anything in cash here in China for about 5 years or more. My wallet stays at home, along with my bank cards.
Everything I pay for is done with my phone via the Wechat app.
Even the poorest street vendor selling homegrown fruit & vegetables will have a QR code to scan to accept digital payment.

I was initially reluctant to move from cash to digital payment (you have to go through a bit of a tiresome process at the bank to register). However, I got fed up with going into shops, bars and cafés only to find they didn't have sufficient float in the till to give you your change (the staff would scurry off and try and find somewhere to get some change).

Youngsters laugh at cards all on the phone app etc.

Those who joined the 20th century regularly use cards.

Those who make Jacob Rees Mogg look like modern man use cash only.

Wurzels still trade in sheep and cows etc.

All about balance, particularly if you are on a budget.

For me the issues are the negatives of a cashless society and a desire to prevent that and keep a 'dual payments' method of paying for things.
