FFS, the bloke is such an absolute tyrant.
Coupled with the invasion itself, this is arguably the most significant development in European politics since the fall of communism

I can't see Ukraine taking a lot of notice. The only thing that changes is that Russia could technically use this as an excuse to use bigger (possibly nuclear) weapons. Those regions are now a part of Russia (in their eyes), so they could claim their sovereign soil is being attacked, and retaliate big time. I used to think that not even Putin was stupid enough to do that, but now I'm not so sure.
I'm starting to think he'll do it.
Why not?
Invading the Ukraine was apparently not acceptable, but he went and did it anyway. Almost as a test to the west, a "let's see what they do" kind of scenario.
He's pushing boundaries and clearly isn't afraid to do so.
Why not when all that happens is more "sanctions"...
On the other hand this could be his face saving get out. “We’ve achieved our goal of freeing our brethren” etc. then back off for a period, as he did in Crimea. Hopefully I’m right for a change.
It's possible.
We all know though that it's unlikely that Zelensky and his boys will settle for that.
They'll be looking to take back that territory for sure. This is where it gets tricky. If Zelensky and the west just accept it, that gives Putin more power and bigger balls. The more he gets away with, the more he will attempt for sure.
His ultimate aim is to take back all territories that belonged to the "Soviet Union".
Where does the west draw the line?
Do they let him and risk a never-ending push for power from him, or do they stop him?
I think it's clear that sanctions are never going to work.
Backing Ukraine with weapons is eventually going to become more and more difficult, how fast can other nations produce/provide more and more?
Then you have the Chinese, who will merely use Russia as a pawn. They want more too. They want what they consider their own territories back.
Very ominous, and probably very drawn out. You can only hope that nukes don't start flying as, if they do, little old blighty is probably going first.
Sanctions ff sake
Biden and the rest of the west are toothless simpletons
Has the Ukraine military gone for targets actually in Russia, or has it just been defence strategy against the invasion on its own territory? Im guessing their Air Force dont have the capability to do so but surely the war will escalate even further if cruise missiles supplied by the west start flying into mainland Russia.
I wouldn't mind betting that plans are already underway to take Putin out.
After all, there's no doubt many of his own that would love to see him gone.
The problem of course is getting to him.
Even getting to him from the inside is probably tough going. It would likely take a few good men sacrificing themselves.
You are the person who writes in superficial quips and sees things in black and white.
I don't pretend that I have a solution and appreciate that the pre-cursors to the conflict were complex and nuanced - and as to what action could be realistically taken once the Crimea was invaded and occupied and the actions by Russia that subsequently followed this year.
You seem to be short on coming up with simplistic solutions past and present.
If you want to limit the death count - in the short term at least - then the west says that Russia can keep it's four regions and to hell to Ukraine.
But that is morally reprehensible.
There is no easy solution whatsoever, and the chance of an easy way out just got harder, cos now Putin has formally considered these regions part of Russia, he will never give them up - previously he theoretically may have withdrawn and claimed he stood up for Russians in the regions..now they are part of Russia in his eyes and he's holding onto them.
It makes it far less likely any successor would give them up too, as they are instantly viewed as being weak in the eyes of many Russians.
Was a serious diplomatic escalation in my eyes today.
Well as we didn't act when we were warned then I am afraid giving the tosser what he wants is probably the best solution
It may be morally bankrupt but the alternative seems to be a land war 🤔
I was looking at Biden on tv saying he's sent another message to putin with new sanctions and I thought you are two years behind here buddy
Giving up the Eastern flank is shocking but without any action other than saying oh you are awful 😖 from the west this is where it ends . ?
I can foresee a repeat of the Cuba missile crisis scenario coming. Putin upping the anti by moving mobile tactical nuclear missile launchers into the annexed part of eastern Ukraine.
