History and stats back this up???

I don't know the stats, but as the game is largely played in front of them and positioning is crucial to their position I'd expect them to have a pretty good understanding of the game.
Probably more accurate to say Cardiff city managers don't make good managers!
Warnock was a winger, Harris was a striker, as was Morison, Ole was a very successful striker, Trollope a midfielder. Malky Mackay generally reckoned to be one of the better City managers of this century was a centreback, Dave Jones a full back. Frank Burrows and Eddie May were centrebacks, Len Ashusrt a full back and going back even further, Jimmy Scoular was the equivalent of a DCM.

Teams in 4th,5th, 6th and 8th also managed by ex defenders.
6 of the top 8 managers in our division were ex defenders, 1 an ex striker and 1 - Critchley - a coach by trade, never had a playing career.

Some defenders off top of my head who have had success at this level and managed in Championship in last 10 years.
Yeah, but apart from that lot what ex-defenders make good managers....
Chris Wilder another defender / successful
championship manager.
Alf Ramsey, Franz Beckenbauer, Phil Scolari and Marcello Lippi played as defenders and won the World Cup as managers. They did OK. Meanwhile, the manager who won the World Cup recently (Lionel Scaloni) apparently played most of his career at right-back.
Defenders who have won the Euros as managers: Richard Moller Nielsen (Denmark, 1992), Berti Vogts (Germany, 1996), Roger Lemerre (France, 2000), Otto Rehhagel (Germany, 2004), Fernando Santos (Portugal, 2016).
