I've spent a lot of time in the States. Where are you from they ask? I reply Wales. Is that Wales England is the response.
Not that long ago there wasn't even a decent hotel in Wrexham. Since the building of the dual carriageway from Wrexham to Chester most people preferred to stay on the English side of the border. I don't know what it's like now but things would have to improve drastically for it to be a decent place to experience a tourism boon. People might visit there from overseas out of curiosity but I would be surprised if there is much else to captivate their interest preferring either to travel to Cheshire or inland towards North Wales proper.
I disagree Kev
People may know who Gareth Bale is but ask them to point out where he’s from on the map and they’re scratching their heads
Same as Vincent Tan and his Malaysia involvement
I was in Sabah on holidays
People had no clue who Cardiff City were or which country we were from
The tourists the journo’s were interviewing in Wrexham last week were from Australia and USA
None of them interviewed knew of Wales or had ever been to a football match but only came because of the World media attention with Wrexham and the Hollywood connection
Ticket touts at a non league club have never been seen before
My mate who lives in Newborough on Angelsey says match day tickets are selling above face value
Nuts
And I agree with Vindec
When the tourists find out they’ve seen everything in a couple of days they’ll venture down to South Wales
That’s where the tourist money is distributed and filters down
Think they would have to sweeten it with a breakthrough role in Hollywood.
Don't see him having any interest in the glamour of Wrexham and league 2 otherwise.
As far as I'm aware, most foreign (especially American) tourists that go to North Wales do so via Ireland and on their way to places in England. I can't see many making a pilgrimage to Wrexham on the strength of show about football that's on Hulu.
On reddit today a poll was posted in the wrexham subreddit entitled 'how did you become a fan'
2,700 have voted so far and the answers are as follows:
1.5k are fans after seeing the documentary.
650 like it's always sunny in philadelphia
225 are fans of deadpool
200 chose other
60 chose long term supporter
60 chose from the area (so probably supported a big team until Hollywood showed up).
Lmao
Not knowing Cardiff City FC is a bit different to not knowing Gareth Bale at Real Madrid.
Had Bale not played in America, been marketed as one of the MLS' biggest signings ever, won 2 trophies and then a few months later captained Wales and scored against the USA in the World Cup, then I'd say maybe him signing for Wrexham would put a new spotlight on Wales from Americans that know of him/Real Madrid without knowing his nationality.
It actually wasn’t the power of advertising TLG
I got really friendly with a work colleague who was from Sabah.
His family visited Wales and we hosted them
Our kind gesture was reciprocated and we accepted an invitation to visit them
We actually stayed in their holiday home which was on the island of Sapi
It’s also called Paradise Island 🏝️
The house was on stilts in the water
You had to walk along a boardwalk to get to it
Without doubt the best holiday we’ve ever had
Unfortunately my colleague passed away suddenly from Cancer last year but his son Chelgar is over here (Manchester) in university
We’ve always remained in contact and are welcome back anytime
Not everyone is a fan of football Kev
Hollywood
The spotlight of the World Media on little old Wales
This story is far bigger than we realise
The story captures the imagination like no other
Gareth Bale’s odds of coming to Cardiff last summer were 1/3
How things change in life
If you had suggested he’d sign for Wrexham you’d be castigated
This story is about a vision two people had of making it big
Signing Bale would be genius
Like I said Kev not everyone is a football fan but this story is going to run for a very long time
Just watch the visitor numbers increasing on the back of it
The Wrexham story has gone global
Journalist crews were at the racecourse from all over the World
It’s not just a football story
THAT is the point.
Ryan Reynolds this, other guy that, hey look! Other Hollywood guys.
The actual football is irrelevant. Yadda yadda yadda Wrexham promote yadda yadda yadda.
It was nauseating when people fawned over Hammam with his walks and ice creams. This is that amplified by a million.
I said that earlier in the thread DW
Tan has alienated himself from the fans and his silence regarding important club issues has been deafening
Compare that to Wrexhams new owners and the difference is night and day
If Gareth Bale signs for Wrexham the club would be headline news globally every week
You couldn’t put a price tag on the free advertising
It would be business genius
After the two have gained several promotions and made a film they’ll be open to investment offers in the multi millions I’m sure
Good luck to Wrexham and we’ll all be watching the unfolding story with great interest 🌎👍
