An ITV comedy, I thought was quite good was Cuckoo’s Nest, with Lewis Collins.
A comedy show that appears to have slipped under the radar is Drop the Dead Donkey, which was brilliantly written by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin. It spawned some memorable characters and many of the actors involved such as Stephen Tompkinson, Neil Pearson, Jeff Rawle went on to star in other shows. Gus, played by Robert Preston was, along with Kryton in Red Dwarf, one of my all time favourite comic creations.
After being off air for over 20 years, the show is touring the UK (Inc Cardiff) next year, so that's one for the diary.
Strangely enough I met Tommy Cooper after a Cardiff game probably about 1973 against Norwich. In the evening it was the street outing to see the Pantomime at the New Theatre. I just remember some big bloke stopped me and my dad as were walking from NP into Cardiff and asked us was there a toy shop near? I remember being starstruck when I realised it was Tommy Cooper. Thinking back now he was probably in need of some props. I’m going to have to look up now which year we played Norwich in January.
Not sure if it’s been mentioned already but an itv one I quite liked was Hywel Bennett in Shelley. I think it was his girlfriend (possibly Fran) who made the programme for me.
Not sure if mentioned as I can't be bothered to trawl through 7 pages.
One word, Bilko
Or Phil Silvers if you want two.
Has The New Statesman been mentioned?
A bit hit and miss, but when it hit it was brilliant. The late lamented Rik at his best.
