planning to come down for a game
in Nov and visit family with missus. by train £57 per person return with senior railcard so ~£115. by car fuel for return trip ~£38 @1.50/l, 250 miles. 45mpg. would like to take train but economics are nuts.
Is £57 return from somewhere in berkshire (guessing by username here) really that bad? 28.50 each for each way .
There are plenty of rip off train fares about, but is this really one of them. Think it's also a bit unfair to compare purely with petrol cost. That's far from the only cost involved in owning a car.
We've spent $231.51 for Chester to Cardiff in November for two adults one child no return.
It still hurts but a longer bus and a more expensive car rental were still shittier options.
Looking at a couple of Saturdays in November, there are tickets available for just over £20 reading to Cardiff and about £14 back
As has been suggested upthread. Worth looking at ticket split or another split ticketing site
Might be worth looking at a friend's and family Railcard.
