Exactly, its why protests by people like JustStopOil are ill conceived. If the UK unilaterally stops oil exploration you dont take away the demand for oil, so oil will still be resourced, just not by us. Same as the closure of the opencast at Merthyr, the cal will still be required, e'll just import it. We are crucifying our economy for the environment when in the grand scheme of things we are having no affect whatsoever as we are just moving the emissions from the UK to other more polluting countries.
.
The alright jack Greens/ Socialist don't like smoke stacks, drilling , fracking , farting , cows , manufacturing. That's who don't give a hoot , as long as its not in thier back yard .
Everything will be plastic / paper soon .
JustStopOil sponsor Labour and quite happy to see jobs lost , ffs wake up.
WAG will fix it
Let's face it though, Tata wouldn't be doing this if the plant was profitable. This is motivated by money rather than any desire to cut their carbon emissions, even though they're citing it as part of the reason.
Tory privatisation started the downfall of the steel industry. Sunak and the previous Tory PM's to blame/UK will become the only country in the G20 without the capacity to make its own steel from scratch.
Tata steel are a privately run company who have chosen to put all there resource into Tata steel Holland.
Funny thing is Corbyn would have been on the side of the workers. Re-nationalised the steel industry and sorted the energy companies to boot.
It's sad not so many people don't understand the British political system. The only politicians who can have a greater input on the job losses is the UK government
There is either a market for it or there isnt. If there is a market for it then the cost of producing it needs to be looked at. I remember seeing the energy costs for Tata for huge compared to other countries.
ps - if they shut it down - then we can buy it for a quid and we can start polluting the atmosphere again or just buy an electric furnace instead of a coal fired one. We are out of the EU, so the EU laws on stopping state intervention / competitor advantage are gone - unless they are part of some other agreement ?
Well done though on getting the Tories and Corbyn in on the same sentence.
pps just for info - it was the Chinese that screwed it by dumping steel on the open market. China produces 800 million tonnes a year - we make about 8 - we are insignificant other than niche.
They did that for a reason - we only make 8 millions tonnes per year - chinese do 800 millions tonnes, how much other stuff do we import from china ?
Ideally reduce the need for Chinese goods and materials.
When Drakeford was building the new link road down the docks it was constructed with steel from Germany - even though over the road Allied steel Wire produced the same product.

This. If they were serious about electric furnace they would have kept one blast furnace working whilst building the former. Otherwise what are they going to do with the remaining 1000 employees whilst the construction goes on? Maybe they intend to start construction immediately - I have no idea how long it will take - could it be ready by September? Seems a very short time to me!
