That is a very unusual stat. Unlikely that’s happened any other times surely?
A similar stat is Yeovil Town in 2005 in League 2, finished the season with only three other teams conceding more goals than them, and yet they won the league.

Just came across this.
In 28/29 season City conceded the fewest goals in the First Division, but finished bottom and were relegated.

Some weird numbers at that time. Teams scored an average of 77 goals that season. Last season in the top flight teams scored an average of 54. We kept only 8 clean sheets that season - we've kept fewer in only 18 other seasons, so it wasn't so much that we had a great defence. We failed to score in 17 games that season - we've only failed to score in more in 6 other seasons. No other side scored fewer than us in the entire league that season. It's one of our feeblest seasons in front of goal, made all the more feeble by the number of goals were being scored at the time.
It's the lowest number of goals we've conceded in a season and been relegated. We conceded 61 in 1981/82 and 62 in 1974/75 and went down. We also conceded 62 in 1959/60 but won promotion!
Leicester City are the only side to have been relegated, in 2007/08 (to League 1), having conceded less than a goal a game, conceding 45 from 46 matches.
Peterborough won promotion in 2011 from League 1 conceding an incredible 75 goals, but scored 106. Only Bristol Rovers conceded more that season.
If you're interested, Wimbledon hold the record for most goals conceded to win promotion, with 76 in 1983/84 from Division 3.
When Huddersfield were promoted to the Premier league in 2017 (via the playoffs) they had a goal difference of -2. The won 10 more matches than they lost.
Good stat and thought it worth exploring. That's the only time a side has ever won promotion with a negative goal difference.
Brighton had a GD of -6 in 1991 but made the playoff final, losing out on promotion to the top flight after defeat to Notts County.
Brentford had a GD of -3 in 2005 but lost in the playoff semis to Sheffield Wednesday.
Only 11 sides have managed top 6 finishes in the bottom 3 divisions and had a negative goal difference. In 1973 Port Vale finished 6th with a goal difference of -13!
In the 1992/93 season Norwich finished 3rd in the premier league, with a goal difference of -4
Might have this wrong but when Blackpool were relegated from division 2 In 1978 Bob Hatton was the leading goalscorer in the division.
Don’t think you have, there’s a Blackpool game from that season against Blackburn in which he scored four knocking about on You Tube and the commentator said he’d already scored three hat tricks. I think the game was played with about two months of the season left and Hatton was already on something like twenty two goals.
I've often wondered whether goal difference would be a better way of running a league than points for winning and drawing.
Didn’t Hull get promoted to the premier with a minus goal difference ?
An example that comes to mind.
Say you're 1-0 down with 5 minutes left. In points for a win, going for the equaliser and earning a point far outweighs conceding a second and still being on 0 so it's worth it.
But with only goal difference, going from -1 to 0 is the same as going from -1 to -2. It's equally good/bad. There's not more to gain for trying to equalise than trying to not make your result worse.
Conversely though there's as much to play for in games where a team is comfortably winning - if you're 3-0 up there wouldn't be teams taking their foot off the gas as they could get 5 or 6 points, and the losing team could get points back as well
I think it would promote attacking play
No, the worst GD they had was +9 in their last 3 promotion seasons.
In 2007/08 they went up through the playoffs with a +18 GD. Bristol City had challenged for much of that season with a negative goal difference, reversed on the final day of the season with a 3-0 win to give them a GD of +1.
