Good stat and thought it worth exploring. That's the only time a side has ever won promotion with a negative goal difference.

Brighton had a GD of -6 in 1991 but made the playoff final, losing out on promotion to the top flight after defeat to Notts County.

Brentford had a GD of -3 in 2005 but lost in the playoff semis to Sheffield Wednesday.

Only 11 sides have managed top 6 finishes in the bottom 3 divisions and had a negative goal difference. In 1973 Port Vale finished 6th with a goal difference of -13!
