It's an inevitable development in the modern age. Teams started out as local entities and the players were locals. As the game became more successful we often experience a situation where even a Welshman doesn't appear in our first eleven, let alone someone from the Cardiff area. Like or not, the game has become globalised - and the local connections are much looser than ever. Only the fanbase remains local by and large - until success comes along (not a great threat in City's case). Be careful what you wish for when the top teams are slaves to optimising their revenue.
