Well if the child like debate is anything to go by last night the tax on pensions is the least of our worries - any shred of hope I had that either were capable of leadership has gone

Coupled with the change in boundaries where all of my potential candidates are now living 40 miles away or more and in a completely different social and economic area to me means I have no idea who to vote for come July as I don't know any of the candidates on the list

Most pensioners already pay tax on their pension, the state pension is £11,502 and the tax-free allowance is £12570 so it could take 3/4yrs before these pensioners who at present don't pay tax, will pay it, unless, of course, the next government abolish the freeze on tax-free allowances then they will carry on not paying tax on their state pension.

Apparently Sunak announced a week ago that, if re-elected, he will introduce a higher tax free allowance for pensioners.

    True. I'm paying tax now
It's slightly hidden, as HMRC adjust your tax code and send it to the "other income" source, so you receive the state pension in full, the tax is taken elsewhere.

The Tories are proposing that the personal allowance rises to around £13,000 for pensioners from 2025 and keeps increasing.

The independent Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) think tank has pointed out that this is not so much a tax cut to prevent pensioners from being hit by a tax rise already happening.

The IFS estimates a third of pensioners, those on the old state pension or with limited UK work history, won't see any tax relief under the scheme.

The average pensioner could benefit by £300 a year, but low-income pensioners won't fare as well.

Analysis by BBC Head of Statistics Robert Cuffe found someone on the state pension alone will only save £29.40 a year by 2030.

Starmer is marketing himself to the solution for everything that could be improved, but not everything he bangs on about can be improved by the type of government in charge. This is like another brexit marketing plan, people being promissed the world, but in reality................. Those that are red through and through may want to book mark this, to regurgitate in 18 months time and tell me that everything and everyone is much better off, illegal immigrants are a thing of the past and you have more in your pocket, but I dont think that will be the case somehow.

That's fair people who paid in the full forty years or is it thirty-five now, anyway get the benefit from their contributions and hard work ethic.

Labour will have to increase taxes for green levies alone, I'll give them as little as possible. Salary sacrifice pension below higher rate and to as low as I can manage also reduces NI, spend cash savings not in ISA instead, whack everything else in Bonds and put in trust and put half the house in trust for the kids. Expression of wish in the pension and leave it till last to avoid IHT, I'll make it a mission.

Probably retire earlier too, I'll give them a few months to see what they do and work on a legal tax reduction long-term plan. I'll look up Angela Rayners tax tricks on the BTL's.

Oh yes Labour cannot be trusted to kick pensions. Or Pensioners.

Critically it was a Tory government who brought in Triple Lock boosting pensions this year.

Lets not forget Gordon Browns dreadful tax raid costing billions

Barely tell the difference….in a few years you’ll all be saying Starmer was a Tory, just like with Tony Blair…..amazed that some people actually still think there’s even any difference, particularly considering the average age on here….

They are much more similar, but Labour will need to bring in more tax to cover green issues and all the pledges they are making to the NHS etc, they are making some of the right noises now, but that's just to get in through the door, it will change.

Heaven forbid that public services cost money. I presume you advocate continued cuts and further streamlining of our public services. I'll never get the psyche of the average Brit who expects to pay less tax and have better public services.

And I wonder which government abolished the age related allowances in the first place

It’s ok, his family have booked a horse and cart when he next wants to get to A & E.

No-one wants high taxation but the obsession with low taxation expounded by the Conservatives in the UK and the Republican party in the US does whiff of the wealthy being able to look after themselves whilst the poor suffer disproportionately from cuts made to public services.

You have to drive yourself or ask a friend you'll be dead by the time the ambulances arrive.
