well I was just in town last night, parked in st David's 2, then walked through the Hayes and cut through an arcade to st Mary's street to meet a mate of mine visiting from London and none of those places appeared run down at all really. my mate also remarked how nice it was.

That's definitive, then. I'll disregard what I see with my own eyes a minimum of three days a week. It's all fine and dandy.

So do we all just agree with the OP and happy clap. I’ve lived in Cardiff for 60 yrs, and I more or less agree with TLG..
Imo, which I am well qualified to make, the city of Cardiff as a whole, and for a plethera of reasons, has declined in many ways.
I’m too long in the tooth now to move away, and have big family connections here, but if was 18 again, and living in modern Cardiff, I think I would move away..
As for the receipt saga, I agree with MM. You should get a printed receipt with every shop you do.

The Capitol end of town is on its uppers at the moment. The John Lewis end though is bustling. I think the feeder being opened, despite it's short length, will help rejuvenate that end of town. Obviously that's the hope anyway and I think it will work. The rest of Queen Street needs a rethink though. I appreciate I've opened up a whole new theme for people to moan about by mentioning the feeder.

I agree I've said the same, the Capital end should be the first part to go, it would be a good space for a bus station or accessible car parks without having to go past the jail and all the way around to Penarth Road John Leiws end.

I’ve always had a liking for West Wales and the Sth West of England. Somewhere a bit more slower than a big city.

There's definitely something in this. The number of empty or derelict units throughout the centre is clear evidence.

High cost of rents and utility bills kills it for many, just left with soulless chains and homeless people sitting in all the empty shop fronts.
Cardiffs grim most of the day, it livens up in the evening of course and you might not notice so much, 10/20 years ago it was much nicer.

A car park being a good thing for motorists there is the very reason that this Council will never allow it. The people pulling the strings hate cars and those that use them.

i think Cardiff has quality areas

The Hayes, The Arcades, Bute Park, The Castle, High St, St Davids 2, John Lewis, Brewery Quarter.

St Mary St is lively and the central market seems to have a full compliment of stalls.

Easy to knock some areas but there are decent places to make town good place to visit.

The bus station has been a shitshow but Wood St, the MillStad, Central Square areas are modern. And Mermaid Quay and the general Bay are is a positive experience with lots of eateries and space to walk next to the water.

Queen St was struggling with empty shop fronts but it's improved I seem to recall. Hasn't Sports Direct filled a big space?

Cardiff is almost a boutique city. I'm in Brussels at the moment and it's massive, like Paris lite without so many attractions. Where they get things right is the transport infrastructure, there are busses, trams, metro, overland trains on the move all the time. You barely have to wait more than a few minutes before the next service comes along.

It's not all touristy tough, lots of grafitti, run down areas, construction, shady characters flying around on e-scooters.

No city is perfect, ours is pretty special though.

Brilliant City , lots going on , generally friendly people . Love it here , glad I settled in Cardiff .
Its a small city and as such doesn't have a lot of the more sinister things that go on in larger cities.
Getting on a bit now but always look forward to a night out in Cardiff or popping in for something to eat .
The Bay is pretty good , always got a nice buzz about it
I love visiting other places/cities , always travelling here and there but love coming home .
There will always be negatives in a city, my own personal experience is far more positives than any negatives and was glad the OP was positive .

Myself , Splott Parker and a few of our mates got off the tram/train at the wrong station in Brussels .
It was like a scene from The Warriors as we tried to head back into civilisation ( no one was actually chasing us ) but we knew we weren't in a safe place.

Went to Brussels a couple of months ago and actually got off at Brussels Centrale for the first time. Was very surprised as you step out of the station and are actually in a nice area.

All previous times I've got off at either midi or Nord. Which as you say, are in slightly scary areas.

I always enjoy Brussels for a day when passing through, but it really does have some rough bits.

There are plenty of car parks in the city centre. The council need to limit the number of cars that come in for obvious reasons. I rarely park in the city centre - I'd rather get the train in. Less hassle.
