The only player who comes to mind is Billy Sharp - although he wouldn't challenge Whitts for the title of 'the best ever'.

just reading Peter Whittingham stats
Played almost 400 games Peter Whittingham averaged a goal or an assist every 2.5 Championship games
Geez that's some consistency over a long period of time
I can't think of anyone else that comes anywhere near that consistency can you ?

Bellamy played for us in the Championship, his record suggests that he was a much better player than Whitts. Not a long time Championship player but one of the best to grace the division. Many other top players have appeared in the division too. Perhaps the title of the thread should have included ‘over x amount of seasons’.
Probably Jude Bellingham
or
Harry Kane
the best single season by a player that I can remember was Adel taarabt, at the age of like 21.
There's a difference between best player to play in the Championship or best Championship player.
Whittingham must be very close to the top of the second part of that statement. If not top.
It would be interesting to see Whitts stats before and after his season with us in the PL.
Agree with that. Much as I like Bellamy, I think Rooney may be a stronger call for 'best player' who played in the Championship - if we are talking about their whole careers - not just the time they were in our league.
But I didn't pay much attention to the threat title. Mozzer made clear what he was getting at ('consistency over a long period of time') in the body of the post.
Mr Beckham
I can think of a player who played for England 21 times, won the Football League Championship twice, the FA Cup, the Football League Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He played 45 games for a Championship team in one season helping them win promotion.![]()
Bale played 40 odd games for Southampton in tne championship.
But if you’re talking about playing their best when they were in the championship- maybe Steve Bull - albeit not called the championship at the time
It depends on if they had a long term impact and were established Championship pkayers if so Whitts is up there as one of the very best (He was quality) If he had pace he'd have made it big time at Villa
The likes of Kane ,Bellingham , Bale , Bellars , Komas had cameo appearances.
This thread has gone daft. People mentioning players who were either at the start of their career or at the end of it, they were never 'Championship players' in the same way Lee Peltier was never a Premier League player.
Bellamy was ultimately perhaps a slight let down, but what a signing, and esp at the start I thought he was brilliant. Used to love how he drew players out.
That 4-0 Doncaster game is perhaps in my top 10 City games, as I thought the world was our oyster
Do you mean the Doncaster James?
