Why is Rodri still on the pitch?
A question the ITV commentators threatened to answer, but then dodged.
I struggle to understand the laws where there is a foul in the box and a penalty.
A red card can be given as well as the penalty - depending on the severity of the foul - but my understanding (which may be wrong) is that the referee can deem the penalty to be punishment enough and settle for a yellow for the foul.
Rodri did foul, but it was a slight touch.
If he had fouled just outside the box with only the keeper to beat he would probably have got a red for denying a goal scoring opportunity.
What a start
Another cracking game this.
What are the odds the England game tomorrow will be the exception...
SUNDAY 16th JUNE
FT: POLAND 1 - 2 NETHERLANDS
FT: SLOVENIA 1 - 1 DENMARK
FT: SERBIA 0 - 1 ENGLAND
Regarding the Rodri foul, my understanding was that it was changed a few years ago and unless its deliberate denial of a goal scoring opportunity in the box theres no double jeopardy. It is a yellow as the awarding of the penalty is deemed enough of a sanction. No idea if thats actually the case at the Euros but thats what I thought was now the FIFA law.
Outside of the box its a red no matter what (see the incident in the PSG Barca game in which Barca would have rather a penalty because it only would have been yellow).
Given that he probably didnt touch him, I think if thats the case its the right decision. If it wasnt for the fact it was a totally open goal and made absolutely no sense youd call it a dive and say Croatia were lucky to even get the pen and not end up with a yellow themselves.
I actually thought the decision was going to be overturned. The whole episode seemed to sum up croatia pretty well, more interested in cheating and breaking up the game than actually scoring a goal.
Spain looked bloody good mind. Sat back 2nd half, but they had the game in the bag by half time.
I'm predicting a 2-2 draw for England tonight against Serbia and an easy win against Slovenia, which will be probably be enough for them to get out of their group.
Good game between Netherlands and Poland. Netherlands the better side, but not by much. Poland look a lot more open and attacking than they have in previous tournaments.
Strangely, it looked like one of the polish substitutes managed to hurt himself while remonstrating with the ref from the sidelines. Hopefully for him it's not a bad one
Enjoying Slovenia v Denmark. 1-1 and Slovenia hit the post with a thunderous strike too
Worried for a sec as there's a CCFC flag in the crowd. Thankfully it says Sky Blues underneath.
