I’m not sure what happened in this thread, I just wanted to know if people tip trades or not
Then it turned into mug class warfare
    Before finishing with arguments

This seems to be the same as every thread now, except without the mug section

    No.

    To the original question.

Does make me think of that scene from Resevoir Dogs though.

Some posters are common denominators regarding schoolboy exchanges on here.

And a germane response to the question posed is that tipping tradespeople has never occured to me.

I have had differences of opinion on here but I don't descend to the language of the playground.

Your Mr Perfect comment says it all.

I had what I thought was a playful exchange with Sludge, if others want to read more into it I cant control that.

Sludge gives it plenty, seems to get away with it as well as some sort of darling of ccmb, he can get quite nasty.

As for this particular exchange, Mr. Perfect was me having a sense of humour, and you clearly failing.

Loosen up a little starchy pants.

Before the mods delete more comments unnecessarily (I went to bed last night it was done) I am off to work. I don't log on to ccmb on my phone.

On a related subject (sort off) how long would you leave it before you chase a tradesman for a quote? I had someone around (who had been recommended to us) two and a half weeks ago, and heard nothing. Maybe this means he doesn't fancy it? Admittedly there was quite a lot for him to quote on.

Ah - I should read the thread first! It's gone a little off topic, hasn't it?

I'd be on to it by now.The likelihood is that he doesn't fancy the work, for whatever reason, and as I was self employed for 28 years I pretty much know the reasons why people don't get back to prospective clients. Most self Employed people or sole traders are all over the place, rarely organised and living on a prayer. It's not all their fault, and they will take on too much work or just look at jobs they really can't fit in just to see if they can make some quick money on them, cash flow is a constant problem. Anyway, good luck finding someone 👍

Thanks for that. According to those that have recommended him he's supposed to be very good and his prices are around the going rate too, so I'm a bit reluctant to let it go. It sounds from what you say that he may just not be that keen, but I'll give him a bell towards the end of the week anyway. Maybe he's just super busy.

Super busy is very likely, especially if he's being recommended. Sometimes it's as simple as not wanting to tell the client that you can't get to them for a couple of months, that makes no sense whatsoever when receiving no contact at all is worse!

Haha - he has literally, literally just texted me! He's had Covid . (Smiley not because he has been poorly, but because I understand now why I hadn't heard from him. Maybe I don't need to change my aftershave after all!)

I find that generally, a poor one will get you the quote back next day and are ready to go whenever you are

Anyone vaguely good you will need to ring several times over the course of 2-3 weeks, send texts, and also whatsapp. I find that whatsapp often gives a better response than texts; i'm not sure if that's because people don't read their texts or because you can see when someones read a whatsapp? Probably a totally different can of worms.

Once you get a quote, I find generally it's almost as difficult to commit to a date. Some will openly tell you they're too busy and don't know their arse from their elbow whereas others will make up a story like it seems yours has, e.g. covid.

But as tuerto said above I think it's lack of organisation, doing things on a wing and a prayer and I agree i'd rather them just give me a date for 2 months time rather than the runaround...

With regards the insults back and forth there's one on here who I won't mention the name of for fear of another flounce but they get overly and unnecessarily insulted and angry about literally anything.

This is exactly it. Thing is, plenty of tradespeople are fantastic at their job, but absolutely terrible with communication and organisation. I've been guilty of it over the years. The reason most of them are out on their own (apart from money and lifestyle) is that they're not very good in groups

Yeah, sorry to jump on your thread and take it off at a slight tangent! You've also taken the wind out my sails now with the thought that the Covid thing may be made up . Maybe I should just be upfront with him and tell him 2 months is fine if that's all he can do. Although my plastering will probably have fallen apart by then.

i'd imagine the good ones are so overrun they'll end up on a job from 8 and still end up getting in at 8, then my text comes through asking for a quote and they think f*** that i'll do it tomorrow. He doesnt tip anymore anyway and his mugs are shit

Not at all I think it had descended into arguments about something.
I think the only thing about using Covid or similar as an excuse is generally, you could send a text to say "really sorry but i'm really ill but I'll get back to you asap". I think i've been too ill to do that maybe once in my life for 24 hours? But I don't want to pee on your chips. He's come back to you now so fingers crossed it should be fine

The woman in the house we’re working on asked us if we wanted tea this morning and asked us where the Cardiff mugs were, me and my mate both replied, ‘We’re both season ticket holders’.

you show me a decent tradesman and 9 times out of 10 they are rubbish with paperwork, be it quotes or invoicing

That’s the problem, you’re out all day working, when you got home all you wanted was the settee, your tea and the Echo. (When the Echo was a proper broadsheet evening paper). But to the keep the ship sailing on you had to get home and get out again looking at work, then back home and pricing. Or calling in to look at jobs on the way home, eventually getting home about 7 or 8 o’clock. I’d end up with scraps of paper everywhere with things jotted down. Chaotic!!
