It's fine, Sir Kier says UK is broken.

The council has been under Labour majority control since 2011.

I haven't seen the video, so I will take your word for it regarding the overexuberance.

    Re: Problem in Leeds Tonight

I think it's not that long ago that several police vehicles and cars were set alight during a night of disturbances in Ely

    Last spring wasn't it ?

Good to see the usuals on social media and here displaying faux outrage but a quick 'google' into the facts turn up some interesting perspectives.

The source was the BBC, I used that site as I thought it was befitting to some of the hysterics that was being displayed in social media.

So we have Bangladeshis in London rioting over something happening in Bangladesh
We have people in Leeds setting fire to council buses, the person caught in video doing it is ‘Asian heritage’ something to do with kids being taken into care
And we have a clueless Home Secretary who whose dept just said “ The Home Office said: "We are giving the police the resources they need to tackle crime."

I am more pessimistic about race relations in the UK due to the proliferation of critical race theory in institutions and high immigration and our communities are reshaping less into diverse places and more into a patchwork of highly concentrated and pretty homogeneous communities.

    So there are issues..

And Harehills is a very Asian part of Leeds..

But there is nothing to suggest that it's anything to do with that is there? From what I have read it's about the removal of a child from a Roma family.

The persons chucking rubbish into the bus were white

And there are videos of white kids throwing missiles at the police

I didn't think it would take you long

The academic term "Critical Race Theory" (CRT) has been appropriated negatively by right-wing, racist, and xenophobic groups in recent years. Originally developed in the 1970s and 1980s by academics like Derrick Bell, Kimberly Crenshaw, and Richard Delgado, CRT aimed to examine and challenge the ways in which race and racism intersect with politics, culture, and the law. It provided a framework for understanding systemic racism and its impact on marginalised communities.

However, right-wing groups have distorted CRT to serve their own agendas, portraying it as a divisive and dangerous ideology. Which appears is what you are doing. They often misrepresent CRT as an attack on white people and Western values, using it as a scapegoat for various societal issues. This negative appropriation has fueled fear and resentment, leading to widespread misinformation and misunderstanding about CRT's true purpose and goals.

By framing CRT as a threat, these groups have rallied support for policies that oppose diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (you've thrown in 'high immigration' too) . This not only hinders constructive conversations about race but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and xenophobic attitudes. The misappropriation of CRT underscores a broader resistance to acknowledging and addressing systemic racism, ultimately obstructing progress towards a more just and equitable society.

Also, we start to see posts on here that specifically reference 'looking asian' which starts to casually but insidiously target non-white UK nationals and just serves to prop up institutional and personal prejudices.

Claims to want a constructive conversation about race...refers to people with a different opinion as racist and xenophobic in the first sentence 🫣.

I agree with you that what is an interesting and useful theory 50 years ago has been distorted and I agree that some right wing ideologies have done that, but by far the greatest distortion has come from the left; viewing almost every issue through the prism of race. And that is creating division I'm afraid.

The Home Secretaries responsible for policing, law and order, the justice system etc for the last 14 years have been Teresa May, Amber Rudd, Sajid David, Priti Patel, Stella Braverman, Grant Schapps, Suella Braverman ii (returning after she'd been sacked from the previous time), James Cleverly and up until a few weeks ago............................................... ...Yvette Cooper. Just take politics out of it for just a sec and reflect. Have a look at the policing figures under the Party of Law & Order since 2010 here https://www.gov.uk/government/statis...olice%20forces.

    ....start joining the dots.

No it hasn't. Different opinions can be racist and xenophobic James. That's how it works I'm afraid. Now, people don't like that being pointed out. They think they are being accused of being racist when in fact, it's the 'language' and descriptors that are racist and there should, at least, be some acknowledgement of that.

Well I think the policies you likely support are the ones creating community divisions, driving us apart, dividing us along racial lines etc. I think we've gone backwards in the last 20 years or so. That doesn't mean I think you are racist and xenophobic.

    That's actually really offensive.
