Never had the inclination to even try one. Helps when you have decent people around you so you don’t give into peer pressure.
Can’t say the same about boozing though.

Following on from the Tattoo thread I thought I'd float this one to try and tease them out. I'm not by the way 👍

I was too busy playing football to start smoking, and as the above poster points out, it's usually peer pressure that get's you started.
I've done it all and i'm definitely not proud of it.
Worked down the deep coal mines all over the UK for the Nation Coal Board, British Coal where smoking was prohibited by law and i also worked down the private "drift" mines in the South Wales valleys where smoking was allowed.
Today at the age of 72 i would really urge the younger generation to refrain from smoking altogether. Having a drink with friends and family is alright as long as it isn't used on a continual basis and finally the only time i would recommend anyone taking medication would be when prescribed by a doctor.
That's it! Back to my oxygen bottle!
Success to the Bluebirds
And there unfortunately lies the issue with alcohol. A bad day at college/uni/work/kids have stressed you out more than usual/argument with your partner. All triggers that push people to drinking, until one day you wake up and it's not you in control anymore.
The fact owe have to put conditions on its use should be enough. Shame, as we should do neither.
Never tried it. Don't see the attraction of inhaling poison into your lungs
I started smoking late teens.
Had my last cigarette at 9.00 pm on Friday 12 March 2004.
Cold turkey. Hourly, daily, weekly then monthly struggle to stay off them.
For about 10 years I was a smoker that didn't smoke. Now I think I am a non smoker!
Ditto.
However my dad smoked, the valleys thing was to smoke untipped Woodbine - very high tar content.
When I was young, he took a drag in front of me, then blew the smoke out through a tissue - result - thick brown stain.
I never even thought about trying it after that!
My dad died of a heart attack, aged 52; his brother, who smoked the same crap, died of cancer aged 51; their father smoked the same but lived until 82, when cancer did for him.
Had my last cigarette in December 2010.
A bit like Jon1959 the first month or 2 was tough, whilst the temptation was still there.
I was often tempted to have the odd drag to see if I still enjoyed it, but resisted. Relied on patches and gum to help quit as vaping (which was designed to help you quit, rather than being an alternative) wasn't around at the time.
My last one was 11.50 on Monday 13 Feb 2006 (13 is my lucky number)
Never had the urge to smoke one since. One thing I did do was save all my change, and put it in a tin, replicating spending money on cigarettes, so I could see I was achieving something. It became an obsession. I used to exchange the coins for£50 notes with a friendly pub landlord near where I was working in London. It got to the stage where I had over £7000 in money envelopes in all the pockets of my suits at home. Luckily my then partner didn't have a nosey nature!![]()
Never, I couldn't work out why anyone wanted to, but each to their own.
it was a bit of a nightmare at work in the 80s and going to a club you would stink of fags.
Yes, I gave up just before the ban came in an the first thing I noticed in pubs/restaurants/cafes etc was the smell.
Just thought i'd add that i haven't touched or smoked a cigarette for just over 32 years. As far as alcohol is concerned i haven't had a drop except for a can or two at birthday parties or Christmas.
Never smoked fags but smoked a pipe for about 10 years, never inhaled and mild tobacco, just for the aroma. My daughter made me pack it in when I was 40. I was 80 in April this and started smoking the occasional pipe again. Am I right in the head?
You have to be rich to smoke these days, was it is £20 for twenty? Insane….most smokers I knew did 20 a day easy, about £500 a month in todays money….never been a smoker bar a bit of weed in my 20’s.
