It was an exhilarating night until the final moments. I will never forget my disconsolate walk back to the Central Bus Station that night.

I spoke to former City journalist Peter Jackson recently and he said that Fred Dewey told him that he was happy for the City to stay in the Second Division getting into Europe every season via the Welsh Cup and making a few quid that way. He did not want to be in the First Division paying the higher wages that went with it. Your point about Fred Dewey and the purse strings is correct

Yes, you’re right, sorry about that. There’s something in the back of my mind about away goals not applying in the latter rounds of the competition at that time though. I think it might have been from the Quarter Finals onwards - three of the Quarter Finals in 67/68 went to replays, but as the scores were the same in both legs, the away goals rule would not have made any difference.

I’m sure City were heading for a replay until that last minute goal - for a start, it would be daft for Scoular never to pick Bob Wilson again if we were going out anyway without that goal.

City were definitely in line for a replay if that last minute goal hadn't been scored, so the away goals rule must not have been applicable at that stage of the competition.

Wouldn’t the away goal rule only have been applied at the end of extra time? If so we’d have gone into another 30 minutes with Hamburg progressing should no further goals be scored.

Scoular wanted to sign Quintin Young from Ayr Utd and told the board he could guarantee City promotion if they agreed. The rest is history, and the next season Young signed for Division 1 Coventry City.
