    Upcoming season - midfield

Maybe we could have threads on formations and personnel for the upcoming season. Let's start with midfield.

I'll admit I have got a Scooby about who Bulut will pick and how they'll line up in midfield.

Anyone want to have a go?

2 defensive midfielders to sit in front of the back 4. One attacking midfielder to sit in front of the 2 defensive midfielders. None of them allowed to attack until the last 10 minutes as long as we're only 1 goal behind.

    Ok. But who?

Ralls and Siopis and then Ramsey?

The central 3 or the whole 5 or the league cup 7?

    I think Bulut will pick:

Siopis, Ralls or new signing, Ramsey (then Turnbull on Ramsey's days off though I'd prefer Colwill R).
Willock and a new right winger otherwise maybe Davies pushed out there but I'm not sure.
League cup: Colwill J, Colwill R, King, Romeo, Alnwick, the Fred Keenor statue and Betty from the tea bar.

I don't see a lot in Turnbull (I hope I'm horribly wrong) so I'd prefer Colwill but I'm not sure Bulut rates Colwill.

Is the new guy a DM then?

I'm assuming Robertson will be signing from Man City and I think he might be a box to box type and Siopis would be the DM but this is all supposition.

If we have to start with Joe Ralls we've not recruited well.

Ralls never lets you down and is 100% committed, I see him as the player we bring on to close a game out, or playing in a cup game.
He’s earned the right to stay with us and he still has a lot to offer, but I think you’re right about him starting.

I think as it stands it will be Ralls Ramsey and probably Siopis. I'd love to think he will start Colwill but I don't think he suits Bulut ball.

Which, with an ageing Ramsey returning from another injury prone season, doesn't inspire me with any confidence.

If our centre backs are supposed to be as good as some say, play one defensive midfielder and have a go in games.

You can get away with having one midfield player who doesn't quite have the legs anymore, however, you won't get away with playing two such midfielders (Ramsey and Ralls).
But I'm still hopeful we'll sign a new box-to-box player to play alongside Ramsey, and probably Siopis.

    That's not Bulutball though.

I'd love us to play front foot football particularly at home but that's not his style of play.

It will be a non press with everyone behind the ball and try and break us down. Wingers will be expected to track back and double up as full backs.

Whoever plays up front is in for a difficult time.

I think Isaak Davies could do well under an attack minded manager but I fear he will be written off as not up to it by some of our fans after a couple of games.

We could sign Haaland for Ł60m and turn him into a striker whose contract gets mutually terminated so he can join Sutton Utd on a free.

What I don't understand is that this game of getting everyone behind the ball didn't get results last season, yet Bulut didn't learn from it. When we started the season more on the front foot we got into the playoff positions, admittedly it was quite early in the season.

But from the moment he went more defensive, thinking of some time after we beat Bristol City, we conceded more goals, could hardly score and lost more than all bar Rotherham. Those tactics didn't work, yet he persevered with them time and again. They worked for England as England had good enough players to raise things when they went behind. But we don't have those players, which is why we kept losing by more than one goal last season.

With so many sides now playing out of the back (with a lot not that good at it either) it makes sense to play a high press and try and win the ball up the pitch. But we don't. We just get everyone behind the ball and allow sides the freedom to pass it about and gain confidence.

Sunderland looked nervous and all over the place at our place and were on a bad run. After 15 mins we made them look like Man City and you would swear Jude was playing and not Jobe.

Meanwhile we pass it about get pressed and can't cope and are highly reliant on a good set piece game. If that isn't to last years standard we could find ourselves in serious trouble.

    Good post.

Yeah, that Sunderland team faced us when their confidence must have reached rock-bottom.
Instead of pressing them right from the kick off we backed off them and, as you rightly pointed out, they gained in confidence.

Was Bulut being stubborn by not adapting to the opposition, or is he tactically inept.... or both?

Absolutely. The worry for me is that Bulut didn't see that.

I know much was made from our ability from set pieces. In the first half of the season we were scoring from something like every 5 set pieces we had, I don't have the stats to hand, but it was about 4 times more often than the next best side, who were scoring roughly once every 20 set pieces. There was no way of continuing that form, we didn't for the rest of the season. That's another reason our results plummeted.

I take no pleasure from looking at our stats over the last 30 games as most make for very grim reading. If we carry on as we did from November, we'll be having another relegation battle.

Probably Siopis/Ralls alongside a new CM
Then one of Ramsey/Colwill/Turnbull at 10
