The nations league is great isn't it?
To think evryone moaned about it when it first came in
each to their own, I think it's great -certainly wouldn't want to go back to pointless friendlies during the international breaks - and you'll still need the international breaks as you cant expect a national side to just meet for the summer tournaments without playing other games.
It also gives the smaller teams something realistic to play for - I doubt anyone in San Marino will be complaining about it
I saw a lengthy report about that on Sky Sports. Apparently, the day after the game you'd never have known it took place. Virtually nobody in San Marino cared apart from the team.
You say: "certainly wouldn't want to go back to pointless friendlies during the international breaks" and I agree. There is no need for international breaks at all unless teams are playing in proper competitions during them. International sides should also be limited to three friendlies a season. Maximum (I'd opt for two).
You say: "you cant expect a national side to just meet for the summer tournaments without playing other games." Why not? If it was the same for everyone, then no problem.
Like every other aspect of football these days, international football is at saturation point. It's just ridiculous. Never used to be like this and there's no need for it to be like this now either. Restructure the existing competitions by all means, but don't invent stupid new ones for the sake of it.
