In West Dover, Vermont today (for 3 days). Started in Washington, then train to Philadelphia, then train to New York, then train to Boston to pick up a hire car. Been to Kennebunkport (shrines to Bush senior!), Bar Harbour and Jackson. Back to Boston early next week and fly home on Friday. Never been to the USA before (apart from transiting through airports). An experience - and more so because of the election campaign.

I’m really keen on seeing Vilma Sanchez win the race for Probate Recorder in western Maine, so I’m thinking of applying for political asylum to escape the curse of Starmer. I have heard that all Americans welcome immigrants and will allow me to vote before the ink is dry? Not sure what a ballot harvester is - but if it has anything to do with pumpkins it will do well. People who are invested in the orange man bad narrative have great difficulty being objective, and I understand that. However, I am always going to vote for the person who makes my life better, not worse, and I actually don't give a fkkk who they are as long as they do their job. What imports from the US left have you detected? What do you think of as the ‘left’ in a US context? There is no question of the influence of the US right through social media - led by Trump and the MAGA lot (echoed here by Farage and a many of the Tories), Musk, the fossil fuel lobby, Christian Zionists, white supremacists, and on and on. But the left? I suppose there is some online influence still from BLM, and the Jewish campaigners against the genocide in Gaza, and a few environmentalists, but the influence and noise is totally asymmetrical.

I am in the USA now ( been here 3 weeks so far) and in the liberal/Democrat north east. The two things that have struck me hard are how divorced from any idea of ‘the left’ the mainstream Democrat party is, and how much support for Trump there appears to be in rural and small town America even in states where he is thought to have no chance.

Donald Trump took credit Wednesday for the elimination of Roe v. Wade, embracing his role in selecting the Supreme Court justices who were instrumental in ending the half-century precedent that protected abortion rights nationwide.
