Getting old is no fun, but being able to recall what happened in UK and USA elections over a period of sixty years because you were there to see them does provide you with some insight into these things I feel. Yesterday I must admit to being a bit baffled that Trump had gone beyond the 47/48 per cent figure that those apparently in the know were telling us was the limit of what he could achieve, but I'd say it's a truism to believe that when an incumbent party is perceived to have failed on the economy it loses power in the next election I would guess about ninety per cent of the time.
There'll be all sorts of reasons put forward as to why the Democrats lost so heavily, but maybe the answer is the one that usually decides elections - that is, it was principally because they were deemed to have failed a test which has stood since well before my time - did the economy improve under our watch?
