Thread: Rob Phillips stepping down

    Rob Phillips stepping down

Slightly odd timing that he will be finishing in his role next Friday. While I know BBC Wales isn't to everyone's liking, it's the best coverage we have as a football club and Rob Phillips has been an excellent broadcaster and journalist for many years. Big shoes to fill.

    He's excellent

Surprised he's never been part of the main bbc team

That’s a shame, he’s very good at his role and is passionate about it. He’s genuinely a nice bloke too from my experience.

Such a shame as he's s really good broadcaster and probably the journalist with the most knowledge about the club.

Is he a County fan? I'm sure that i've heard it somewhere.

Yes, grew up on the terraces at Somerton park, before moving to Ponty (I think).

He's never been a good TV commentator, but very good on radio. I think he's been happy covering Wales and the Welsh teams and hasn't had any interest in going elsewhere. There's a podcast somewhere with him from about a year or so ago where he says in his opinion he's got the best job in the world. I couldn't imagine him being a Radio 5 regular and going about from Premier League ground to Premier League ground.

Hmmm... I agree with the last bit, very knowledgeable, passionate and likeable chap.
As a broadcaster, he's decent when he's on the telly (when the viewer/listener can see the game) but as far as his Radio commentary goes, you'd swear he and Kevin Ratcliffe were just watching the game all by themselves chewing the fat.
The number of times I've almost crashed the car not knowing whether it was us that scored or the opposition!

Moving forward, let's hope we go "back to square one".

That said, he goes with my best wishes

    I think he’s great.

People have a pop because he may potentially get 1 think half wrong on 3 hours of broadcasting whilst you have to discuss, watch and analyse.

I bet it’s hell of a lot harder than it seems.

When he's covering the City on the radio though, all you want to do is visualise the game as if you were there

"Newport have just taken the lead away at Stockport who are unbeaten in eight games blah blah blah, Wrexham still being held nil nil at home to the bottom side Workington Town, only the second time this season they..... OH AND HERE'S A CHANCE.... AND ITS BLAZED OVER THE BAR FROM FIVE YARDS OUT"...

... now should I be happy the guy missed or unhappy?
One things for sure, I'm bloody MAD!!!

I do genuinely like the guy though

    He's a Chelsea fan

From what I heard it’s more Au Revoir rather than Goodbye

His replacement will have big boots to fill. I love his enthusiasm for football at all levels in Wales and that he can enjoy a laugh at himself . Met him once or twice and he seems to be exactly the same as he comes over on the radio - hope Enoch Mort is right about him still being around from time to time.

I always enjoyed Ian Gwyn Hughes, he was sharp and concise.

I hate to be pedantic, but the last time Wrexham played Workington Town was season 1969/1970. Which was probably before Rob Phillips was even born. I thought I'd check as I saw Workington's last actual league game v Newport County in season 76/77. County had to avoid defeat to stay in the league and Workington had to win. The match ended 1-1 which meant Cewnty stayed in the football league at Workington's expense.

Most radio commentators do the same, though. Live football on radio seems to mean regular score updates from elsewhere, though this virtually never happens on TV.

That's a real shame, he loves football and it really comes across.

    Re: Rob Phillips stepping down

Wonder if anything was said behind the scenes, as I think it's strange in the middle of the season... Plus having to change the programme name at this point????

    Phillips said he was:

'relinquishing his role as the BBC Wales football correspondent and leaving the full time employment of BBC Wales after 28 years’.

But he'd still be part of the Radio Wales family (whatever that means).

So what if it did and she was good at her job?

That’s a real shame. He’s been a constant on radio wales in my years following the City and Wales :(

I have to admit though, I always now associate him with the gaff he made commentating on Cewnty vs Man U

He said the crowd are now singing “Anthony’s the greatest”

When in fact it was the Newport fans calling Anthony a rapist.

    He soon realised his mistake.
